And a departure from SYD can be later into arvo which is much better (instead of a 1100hr departure) - allowing for domestic connections from other parts of the network or at least a morning’s work

On the negative, a JFK-SYD does not have any spare time up it’s sleeve. It needs an OTP otherwise the crew will run out of hours forcing the airline to cancel or go elsewhere. It is maybe a little better than QF9 because depending on the hours it could go to BNE or LAX/SFO and then transfer passengers. QF9 can land but there is only one place where they can get a replacement QF 787 crew.

I wonder in Y passengers will be allowed to do their stretching in the J cabin.
The J pax stretching in the Y galley at the back of the plane (which is normally already full of Y pax on QF9 as there's no where else to go). I guess the real deal will resolve such trivialities.

I thought it would be too.

But in reality it was completely different.

The additional 4 or more hours made it a very different flight experience. And not stopping somewhere, with all the cabin “disruption” ca 2 hours before and after as well as the stopover time itself only added to that difference.

As far as I can ascertain the current longest commercial flight is SQ21 at 18 hours.
 
Is the “4hr or more hours” the 1 hr prior to arrival Into LAX on QF12 from JFX, 2 hours on ground in LAX and the 1hr after takeoff on the transpacific sector of QF12?
 
Interesting email from the union that covers the flight attendants...

I remember reading reports how some unions demanded to service new age aircraft like the A380 & B787, as if they were still B747, and the like. Refusing to move with the times does none any good.
 
JFK-SYD in J gets 295 SC (same as JFK-LAX-SYD in J).

So a round trip in J with a DSC yielding 1160 SCs would almost requalify for WP status.
Add in the 50 bonus and it’s not almost.
295x2 + 50 plus 295x2 = 1230
Doing this in Dec. SYD-JFK depart Friday, arrive Friday. JFK-LAX-SYD depart Sunday arrive Tuesday.

Jet lag was pretty good actually last time I did that itinerary - I to got into destination time ASAP. Don’t need a “research flight” to tell me that.

This one. We were actually over an hour after departure with 18:15 hours and 15,068 km to go!! (16,600 km in total apparently)

I still don't understand how this flight can be described as "history-making".
1989 - B747-400 did London-Sydney
1993 - A340-200 did Paris-Auckland
1997 - B777-200ER did Seattle-Kuala Lumpur
2005 - B777-200ER did Hong Kong-London EASTWARD
All longer flight times than New York - Sydney!
Maybe the first commercial service on this route will make history.

I suppose it was the first between New York and Sydney?

It did at least have about 50 pax and crew it seems.

OJA had 16 passengers in 1989 and flew longer and further with 1989 technology than ZNI with 2019 technology.
Any corroboration that AJ did a press conference after that flight with dark glasses on?
