Qantas to Introduce Group Boarding and Bag Tracking

Well those at the back should be boarding by the rear stairs and long after those in J; so J passengers and status pax at front of Y should have guaranteed first dibs on overhead bins above their seats.

If Im in J and see a Y passenger ditch their bag in a J bin I simply remove it and replace with my own.

Still think bin space should be labelled per seat.

Where do you put it once removed?
 
Would be good to know. As always one does wonder if it's just the staff controlling the gate but I fear not. Keen for feedback with your experience tomorrow. Good luck!
All good, boarded correctly by group and even put the tensa barrier across the entrance after each group. Heading back to LHR in a few hours so will see what it's like at the outstation.

US airlines with "Economy Plus" or similar (normal economy seats with slightly more leg room), generally have the overhead lockers in that area marked with stickers saying it's reserved for those seats. It doesn't always work out that way in practice.

Tiny gate area at JER and already boarding when we did our b2b so hard to say.

Hahahah! The ones it doesn’t (and I can predict with 99% who) flap their wings about everything anyway.

But on a (more) serious note a work colleague took a trial boarding flight yesterday!

Much the same experience as @JessicaTam excellent summary, though he didn’t hang back to watch it all unfold.

The good part was that he saw 2 people present their phones and the machines beep and the ground staff politely explain its not your turn to board just yet, please wait for your group to be called, won’t be long.

Said the 2 people took it in their stride and went back.

So very similar experience!
 
Especially now when QF is training their staff and pax to use the boarding groups, you'd think that the group number would be rather dominant on the BP's and gate lounge screens. It is also baffling that even in the QF's own examples, the BP data points on the airport printed vs OCLI BP's are in a different order. It'd reduce confusion if it was as consistent across all media, as possible.

AY has the boarding group in the same size and style than other info on their OLCI BP. JAL OLCI uses smaller font but it's sufficiently different to catch your eye sooner or later. And in both examples, the placement of the data point is logical given the context, unlike the QF design.

The group on Qantas boarding passes has always been printed there (if you've ever gotten an AA boarding pass printed on QF stock). I suspect it was originally designed without much thought just to get the data showing, since it wouldn't have been used for QF flights.

Knowing some people who have worked in Qantas IT over the years, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have the in-house talent to actually change the boarding pass printing, and thus it hasn't been done.

Exactly my point. Its a 'trial' - why not make it as easy as possible to get the cattle through the gate in the right order.
