Qantas to Introduce Group Boarding and Bag Tracking

And BA now have a group 0 for Gold Guest List (~QF P1). So you were well down the pecking order!

And yesterdays BA experience boarding group 1 came before group 0.

Group 1 called, then 0/1, 0/1/2, 0/1/2/3, the n 4-9. For priority flyers if your late to the boarding gate when your group is called, you simply join the single boarding line.

I think in the past there may have been something in MMB to link it up, not too sure if it's there anymore?
Maybe I'm thinking about splitting the booking instead.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s a thing… found something in the help section on the main site, and it says you do need to call up for this to be done. Unlikely it’s a self-serve task, at least at this point.

That's been around for select routes for a while now. The problem is that it only gets updated when it gets scanned for the belt, by which you usually see it 10seconds later. There's nothing else in between from what I've observed.

The fairfax tabloid suggest this boarding scheme had been used successfully in Singapore for sometime. Strange I must have missed those call in groups for years and I still have some of the boarding passes which do not have group printed on it

It depends how you define a group. I'm pretty sure they've boarded by row number for years for the A380 (eg at LHR) and I've certainly seen that enforced to fill up from the back of the plane. I know this is now domestic but the comment about SIN makes it relevant.

I don't mind the boarding order changes - always seemed a better way of doing things when I've travelled with other airlines. However:
1. There should still be a priority line throughout the boarding process. Who wants to arrive from the lounge and have to join a long queue?
2. They need to prevent early boarders seated at the back from "dropping off" their baggage into an overhead at the front of the cabin.
On the second point, what's the protocol if you arrive at your seat at the front of Y and find baggage filling the overhead but with no owner seated nearby?

for me I'd either push the bag further down if possible or place the offending bag in the aisle

Google finally launched their find my device network so at this staged I'd go with ones that are compatible with the google network for android.

Does this happen a lot? I’ve seem the odd person chuck a single bag in the front bins but not a systematic ‘filling up’ of a bin by an absent passenger

Hmmm, it's tempting but I don't want to either make it another innocent passenger's problem, nor block the aisle during boarding. I *hate* passengers who think it's ok to put their baggage in another passenger's overhead - such obnoxious behaviour.

It only takes 1-2 bags to prevent passengers who are seated there from finding room for their own. It happens regularly, if only by a minority of passengers.

I'm not sure I get the big deal of being separated from your travel companion/colleague for a few minutes during boarding if they are in a different group to you and it means a more efficient boarding process ultimately.

Agreed. Totally not right to touch anyone else’s bag (other than slight rearrangement).

The other day flying from SIN in J A330, the clown in row 2 had loaded up the locker above row 2/3 and row 1 with his oversized junk (only fit lengthways), then guarded it/tried to have me move my stuff elsewhere as I tried to squeeze my meagre possessions in.

Sadly it seems now even in J we have to arrive early to get overhead space.

Kinda just rude. If denied I’d stay with them if it was family or friend (much like lounge access) … colleagues however, well they on their own!

Sadly it does. It happens more in the US, but I've seen it on QF too - very frustrating - specially when they chuck in J near Row 1 - who absolutely need that space.

Does the same boarding group not apply to all members of a PNR?

I see no difference for priority boarding if they are letting Group 1 & 2 in the same line and board at the same time. It's not efficient to only call Group 1 when the line is filled with Group 1 & 2 passengers and they have to push past Group 2 already in the line... So they call Group 1& 2 at the same time... Same as now haha

Fair enough. I step onto a Qantas plane about 60 times per year and I’ve seen it maybe twice a year.

Not to say my experience is typical or that I’ve been paying 100% attention.

What I have seen (a lot) is the two-bigbag crowd who elbow their way on first and then sit sullenly as the PA call asks ‘second bag under your seat’.

This is infuriating when this happens. I had a Karen pull out my backpack from the overhead and asked who does the bag belong to and then proceeded to ask (demanded) that I put it under the seat in front of me.
I told her that actually I would prefer it in the overhead, at which point a flight attendant stepped in, put my bag back where it was and took hers to the hold.

I wouldn't have minded putting my backpack in the seat in front, but being sat in an aisle seat, the seat struts limit the amount of space to store bag under the seat in front. My backpack would not have fit even if I wanted. The middle seats seem to have the most space to store luggage.

Fair enough - not right to move someone's bag without politely asking (unless they are nowhere to be found because they're sitting down the back of the plane ).

In Y, everyone's 2nd item should be small enough to either go under the seat in front or on top of/in front of their main carry on in the overhead (so that they only take up 1 "spot" in total).
