I hope it is a significant improvement over the current app. The main thing I would want is to be able to check in properly all within the app.
I saw that and was hopeful of something really good. Consume already shows the point balance and status credits, so I can’t imagine QF couldn’t design and build a proper, totally awesome app.
Have you tried Quota? That's even nicer. Shows actual transactions and tapping them brings up the details of it (base/bonus/cabin/sc's).
There's also a new program i've recently installed called Trip Tracker. It's got an 'automagical' function (not that magical) but throw in your FF details (QF/AA and others) as well as Hotel memberships (HHonors etc) and it'll auto import any reservations into the app, and also alert you to changes of any points (I had an alarm the other day saying my AA balance had fallen to 0 which shocked me, until I realised they were just doing maintenance, and it soon reverted back to normal, with another alert to the fact). This requires push to be enabled on your iPhone. Great App and it seems to work really well (I have a dozen or so itinerary managers I cycle through, and this is the least fuss i've seen so far, with the exception of Flight Update Pro, which includes TripIt imports).
Heck something like the Trip Tracker specialised for QF would be nice. It's not hard to import and store an itinerary locally. Couple it with changes etc, and even lounge access guides dependent on your FF status, and you'd have a nice QF-centric app (and if someone did it for all airlines, i'd buy it )
I haven’t got on board with any of the trip managers as I don’t fly enough to consider things a hassle, and don’t mind printing out a few reservation sheets before heading off.
I enter the times of my flights manually into iCal and sync them to my iPhone and haven’t missed a flight yet… touch wood.

I'm in the same situation as you, feeling like I can handle things myself and we don't have the constant change in schedule, delays etc. of the LOTFAP. May I suggest one thing that may help a lot, not sure if it was on this site but somewhere I found out about Flight agenda. It makes the manual task of adding flights to iCal ridiculously easy, much more detailed and cuts out the chance of human errors.
