Qantas to move to new Perth Airport terminal, expand Perth hub

Or they didn’t think SA would be back.
Yeah, I was going to say something along those lines or maybe some sort of internal yield management to make sure the A380 belly is full ie connections from BNE, MEL etc via SYD and not funnelling through PER? (Obviously doesn’t help West coast locals!).
PER-CPT would be good instead.
I suspect the corp money / travel (ie mining) is still very much centred on Jo’burg. Even the locals like to play in CPT but work in JNB.

Yep, I had business in ZA for a while and it was always Jo'burg for the main meetings and then we visited the Cape Town branch office so we had justification to go somewhere better to spend a weekend.

And there's already an A380 flying to JNB.

QF has expressed interest in CPT.

Yes, that was the gist of my earlier comment. As it is, they’ve scaled back frequency but still have more weekly seats overall (I read here somewhere).

Yes, it’s been on the “Sunrise” route map from the beginning, even though it’s technically shorter distance but presumably the more southern GC route is problematic for twin engine.

Plugging that gap with a PER-CPT flight in the meantime would great but still doesn’t help west coast peeps who need to be in JNB non-stop.

Ironically swapping it to SYD-CPT with an A380 and PER-JNB with a 789 would solve all the issues (other than a capacity mismatch).

I think the crux of it is PER-JNB probably wouldn't support both airlines. QF & SA used to codeshare. Maybe they can again? No different to the QF/LA codeshare agreement.

Although both QF and LA fly most days and AFAIK loads are usually pretty high.

But something similar with SA would make a lot of sense if both parties are onboard. Maybe even alternate between JNB and CPT. I reckon that would popular!

I just meant the authorities don’t have a problem with the codesharing even though they are the only operators on the route. So you would think QF and SA could get this over the line.

Don't forget Velocity have an ongoing partnership with SAA which may prevent any further tie up. If you were Qantas why would you want to encourage funneling passengers through Perth if they weren't flying on your own aircraft...

They’d be booking QF codes all the way - not possible on VA metal.

I meant from Perth to South Africa. Just diverting eastern traffic away from Sydney and the existing flight.
They’d still be booking a QF codeshare? 🤷‍♂️

But yes, my earlier comment was suggesting that QF may not have the numbers to operate both SYD and PER routes. Which just pisses off WA based flyers. They’re not going to fly to SYD to then fly back to JNB.

The EK agreement is out of play for Southern Africa, so out of luck there. QR and UL(?) could work but what a PITA to transit.

Not having a QF or QF partner direct option to SA from PER does seem odd.

Well for starters VA was ready to cut them loose a few months ago, so I’m not sure it’s a close relationship at all.

But the codeshare is about recognising some pax will fly PER-JNB and if QF can’t operate that route they may as well get a piece of the pie.

Isn’t that what VA’s doing with QR?

As above the same arrangement exists between QF and LA and that seems to work well for both parties.
