Qantas to Qatar through checking baggage query

Hi all

I have a flight coming up, Canberra to Sydney (booked as a Qantas Reward flight) connecting to a Qatar international flight to London. The bookings are on separate PNRs. I have read on a few forums (but don't seem to have a definite answer) that Qantas may be able to through check my baggage to London at my point of departure in Canberra (as I have a mix of award and revenue tickets, all on oneworld). Has anyone who has travelled more recently got any experience with this/is it something you think they may be willing to do? I have not travelled internationally since COVID, so hoping to pick the brains of more recently seasoned/experienced travellers.

As per the link here, it’s QF policy to check through luggage QF classic reward to OW revenue flight.

Note the “^” footnote:
”^ Exemptions apply for customers travelling on a oneworld separate PNRs when using a combination of award travel and revenue travel. Note: This is a Qantas exemption and may not be supported by all oneworld airlines.”

Given that your connecting via SYD and you do not want to be schlepping luggage from T3 to T1, have a printout of that page in hand.

Not all agents know how to do this, so ask for a supervisor if you initially get a “No” or “Not possible”.

You will find my experience in another thread about exactly this but it worked out - after long discussion and supervisor of supervisor intervention - at SYD check-in for QF SYD to Jakarta (reward) and then onwards on QR to Doha (paid). That was June 2023.

Same situation tried to do this just now. QF award to CGK today with separate QR connection on cash booking. Through check in was refused - I showed them the website and they checked with supervisor. Not sure if a new policy or not following policy

As in, they refused even after checking with their supervisor?

The supervisor also said it wasn’t possible, only to QF or EK, not oneworld airlines.

Edit: just checked with the lounge staff in SYD, check in staff in MEL were wrong and should have checked me through - the policy is correct

I have a similar situation next week, cash flight on Virgin Syd to Melbourne, connecting to award flight on Qatar purchased via Virgin with Velocity points. Does anyone know if baggage can be checked through from Syd?

No, Virgin will generally not through check on separate tickets.
