Qantas-Uber tie-up

My latest airport trip posted within 24hours.

I realised that Uber Pass hadnt been giving me my 10% discount though, just lodge a bunch of claims (fact there is a dedicated form for this in app shows it must be a common pronlem), and over night all the 10% were refunded.

Yep wow. Just checked and have 4x uber line items now from my August 18 trip posted on September 2.

Nothing for my August 31 and September 1 trip yet.

They must have changed the system to batch this process now.

So 10% discount for the 6 months free Uber pass consistently fails to be applied. After each trip i lodge a dispute and 10% refund comes through within 3 hours. Just wish it happened automatically.

I've never had that problem with the 10% discount, but I have noticed that the price can fluctuate by as much as 20% depending on which payment method I select.

I suspect it is a glitch because my 6 month uber pass was a freebie, issues just before they abolished uber rewards and was contingent on me linking a Mastercard to payment methods. I did this but have since defaulted back to PayPal using Amex for many more FF points (Mastercard is only 0.6/$ Amex is 1.5/$)

Have just got into habit of applying for refund after every trip.

Have also notice a huge price jump in quoted fares but actual fares consistently $10 lower, it says due to route but none of the possible routes involve tolls.

It's a pain but the refunds add up.

Used Uber to CBR airport yesterday & today. Usually points land within the same day. Can confirm that the points are posted 3 days with a 3 day delay. Hopefully the points for this weekend will arrive by Wednesday.

Maybe it’s coincidence but I often find whenever I take an Uber to the airport for a Qantas trip there is surge pricing, doesn’t seem to happen if flying other airlines or if I use other ride shares. I’m convinced data sharing happens between the apps with sharing of flight info and pushed surge pricing.

You might just be in a busy area? I've never had surge pricing on the way to the airport — the pricing is consistent with other apps. Sometimes the price will surge when returning home from the airport but clearly when it's busy and the priority pickup area is rammed with people so expected. In this case, I usually try to use InDrive to avoid the surge pricing.

I stopped using Uber to get to the airport a while ago. They became far too unreliable in repeatedly cancelling bookings on me. Not ideal for time critical trips. I’m using a great driver service now through a taxi group. Similar pricing. Reliable. Better service.

I never understood booking an uber, just call one when you are ready to go; if not nearby call a cab.

Pretty simple really. So you don't need to fuss around when you want to go. You just know that a car will be there at the time you've requested. Super convenient and stress free.

I find it helpful to have the driver's arrival as a "deadline" and not actually head to the airport at the last minute.

Had the same problem, then Ola drivers started doing it.

Except IME unless you know the Taxi driver personally, they rarely show for a booking.

And Uber bookings don't always actually book a driver in advance, they just send the job out a little bit before the time you booked hoping someone picks it up.

Living in inner burbs there are always drivers, I just make sure I'm ready 15 mins before the latest I want to leave and request an uber it has never been a problem. Drivers hate it if you arent out front when they arrive, so best to call them when you are actually good to go, not estimating a departure time the night or days before.

I made no comment about taxi drivers so I fail to see the relevance of this point

Factually correct, but what point are you making?

Again, what's your point here? You said you don't understand why people might pre-book an Uber. I explained why I (and probably a lot of others) do. It's simple convenience. Pre-book. Driver is always there ahead of time. You get extra wait time included too. Estimating the time I want to go to the airport is trivial. I know the travel time and I know what time I want to be there. So the time I will want to depart is known well in advance and not messing about prior.

My point is that pre-booking is imo mostly pointless because it doesn't guarantee the driver will be there any quicker than if you order on the day. In fact, some colleagues have waited futilely because the driver who accepted the job in advance then ended up not being on time due to other jobs not being completed in a timely manner or deciding last minute not to work.

Booking on demand gets you a driver already available in your area, pre-booking means the driver may have to commute to your area.

YMMV of course, but i see no advantage except the possibility of disappointment.
