Qantas Ultimate card back - 50K points

So Amex have relaunched the Qantas Ultimate with us. Apparently the point earning is changing 22nd July, as I'm sure holders received the letter. What do people think of this card? My colleague wants to cancel now they're changing the points earning, his two kids have changed his lifestyle and travel somewhat!

Thanks for the info. The $450 seems high.....I would prefer the free qf domestic flight being activated without having to pay for a qf ticket first, like the plat edge card.

Anyone know what are the routings that are included for the free QF flight?

It depends where you live. Living in Perth, the card pays for itself with allowable routes being from PER to either SYD, MEL or ADL.

Hmmm... without wanting to encourage misuse or any abuse of the system, I have lived in Melbourne for some time now with the Amex Ultimate card and always manage to get myself a MEL-PER-MEL ticket (inc change fee of $100 or so for one leg before or after the other leg). This might involve temporarily editing certain parameters in one's Amex and QF profiles though :idea:

Domestic flights are sold as one ways in australia, so sequence is less of an issue. Can't figure out what profile changes wojkd be needed though.

It could become a choice between Platinum Edge and Ultimate and that will be resolved by tour own spending proposed.
Ultimate has been a favourite of ours but on July 21st that changes for me.

Ultimate is basically identical to Reserve (not Edge) except that it's a QF direct-earn. Did you mean that?

My experience has been yes 100% of the time as well as point and discount Y rate.

Domestic flights are sold as one ways in australia, so sequence is less of an issue. Can't figure out what profile changes wojkd be needed though.

Booking a PER-MEL-PER, one might temporarily 'live' in Perth for the purposes of making the booking ( change profile details back later). Once ticketed (or even while on the phone having just made the booking), move one of the legs prior to or after for a ~$100 change fee (which migh also put you into super saver fare rather disc Eco) which will turn it into a MEL-PER-MEL.

Does anyone know about the discovery card (lowest end card). Is it correct to say that there is a free 7,500 QFF Points and all you have to do is run $300 through the card. Then you can discontinue the card after you get the points?

Yep. But I don't know why you'd bother discontinuing the card when it's fee-free...

A couple of months ago I cancelled this card. Now with the 50,000 bonus points, and the 3pts per $ on restaurants & QF flights, I'm seriously thinking of signing up for this card again. Particularly considering the amount of $ I spend on restaurants and QF, the 1.5 extra points will probably be worth while.
