Qantas Vodafone tie up

Phones that altogether don't need sims can't be far off the horizon. They're technically capable phones can detect an SOS signal - just a matter of regulatory hurdles, I imagine. I mean, why can't I just log in to a sim with my username and password?

Well i remember the Analog phones and CDMA didn't have sim cards. i was a e serial number tied to a service.

I am currently on a business plan with Telstra. I can ring any country in the world not just 50. It's part of the package. I Also get 1.5 gig Internet roaming when overseas. I can call from overseas back to Australia free but only from certain countries but enough to make it count.

You've probably misunderstood. Vodaphone can also call any country in the world. But the key point is that voda allows $5 roaming in 50 countries, that is when you are calling from those 50 countries. for that $5 you get to use your full plan allowance as if you were in Australia. Not just 1.5 GB that they give you while O/S. If you plan gives you 6gb in Australia you can use 6GB while roaming in one of those 50 countries.

No point for us. On an optus plan for the next 2 years. Their overseas roaming @$10 per day is good anyway.

Had Vodafone for my first plan. Never again.

One key difference is that optus charge you $10 for every day that you're O/S. Vodaphone only charge the $5 if you actually roam while O/S during a given 24 hour period.

You only get charged if you use the phone,

I read it has having to prepurchase X number of days @$10 a day for Optus.
Postpaid International Roaming - Optus Travel

[h=3]OPTUS TRAVEL™ PACKS[/h]Pre-purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack for $10 per day to get unlimited talk and SMS plus 50MB of data to use in Zone 1 countries. Need even more? No sweat. You can buy multiple days and accumulate the total data allowance. For example, buy 5 days and use your 250MB any time over the 5-day period.

Don't the SIM only plans require 24 month contracts as well?

Yes. I actually looked into these a bit more closely and have now upgraded my current SO plan to the $45 SO QFF plan. It was either the QFF plan or one month at half price access fees and I thought 8000 points for $22.50 was good value.

My bad. The normal sim only plans have no contract requirement.
The vodafone site clearly shows the SIM only plans require a 2 year contract for Qantas plans.
What it doesn't make clear is how often you get points. It appears that you only get 1 set of points during the 24 month contract.

Yes its a sign up bonus only. No ongoing points per $ or anything

Looks like 24 months is required...

Yes, thank you. Mr_Orange has established that fact. I was acknowledging my error with reference to the normal sim only plans - That is not the Qantas red sim only plans. Those normal plans are available month to month.

Well, I signed up to a new 24 month Sim Only plan. I had to do this via the call centre since you can't upgrade SO plans online but they were more than happy to honour the online amount of QFF points (8000). I received half of them today..... I suspect getting the other half could be difficult but will call Vodafone and see what happens.

Having just got back from a few weeks overseas, I'm just catching up with the news of this new QFF points earning opportunity with Vodafone.

I'm currently on a 24 month plan with Optus until December this year so unfortunately will have to stick with them until then.
Although I'm ready to switch due to a number of incompetencies Optus have shown towards me In the past 12 months and can't wait to move onto another carrier.

However, I have been a previous Vodafone customer in the past ( living in Bowral, NSW at the time ) , and their coverage was non-existent to say the least.

So I was wondering if any AFF'er has any experience with their coverage in particular geographical areas that I frequent regularly.
So how is the coverage in Melbourne, both in the CBD ( in high rise buildings) and in the 'burbs'?

Is Vodafone's coverage really any better in regional areas nowadays, particularly the Southern Highlands & Hunter regions?

CCP I have been on VF Red Plans for several yrs now - I cannot answer re Sth High / Hunter but MEL perfect - inner city and burbs - I come from Foster originally and a few years back coverage non=exist but now perfect - many other regional areas fine also now - it aint Telstra but more than adequate IMHO.

Cruiserette also changed from Optus to VF solely because of Optus inept service - she travels to far flung bush areas lecturing and yes VF has some holes but she loves the pluses of VF compared to others so is happy to stick with them. Hope that helps - catch up to you at next MEL function mate.
