Qantas Wine latest offering

From today's email:

Not sure about relative value, but my wife took a liking to French reds in 2011 and thought I might surprise her

i looked at the Italians and the value looked reasonable I thought for the set, not sure about the French?

Given your appraisal, I think I'll get one - just to keep Mrs QF WP happy, of course :D ;)

(I noticed at the bottom of the page linked in the email, there are details o each of the wines and the case prices, so $$ aren't too bad).

For $300, I'll take it (better than I can get flying):

Italians would be my pick of that bunch. I wouldn't say that pricing is a bargain, but its also not a rip-off. Not sure if I'm tempted enough.

The Rioja? My brother's father in law is Spanish and loves his Rioja. But seemed impressed with our Bordeaux present.

Are you asking my opinion of the Spanish wines? Seemed ok. Noticed a riserva and gran riserva in there.

After speaking to a friend who is the authority on Italian wines, I've taken the plunge.

If I hadn't benched myself again after recent bonus point splurges I'd go the Italians based on that nod. I'm a sucker for Italian food/wine.

More your opinion of the Roija. Brother and family are out soon, something to make them feel at home might be useful. Even if SWMBO (and me) feel that European wine is watered down. ;)

Perhaps I'm missing something. I only noticed a mixed case of various European wines. But people seem to be intent on buying them individually. Edit: I see now. I previously just looked at the old world mixed dozen.

Of course, it is probably time for me to work on my Rockford status.

On the note of Rioja, Castillo Ygay Grand Reserva is a great drop, beautifully rich and velvety smooth... Cool bottle too.

Just got this email:

Bloody tempting considering I drank a bottle recently and loved it - but I fear the price will stretch me versus getting some Rockfords.

Need to research pricing...Epiqure have the 2006 @ $56.66/bottle but none of the others...off to check Dans pricing

I'm honestly not familiar enough with most of those wines and whether they represent value for money. If you have the time, look them up on cellartracker.com. Will be useful for a) a rough price guide and b) some tasting notes.

One good thing about Rioja is "risverva" and "gran riserva" actually have some meaning. Implying how long they are kept on oak and in the bottle prior to release. Its a rough guide on quality too, as the winery isn't going to waste time and money on rubbish wine doing that.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

I was getting conflicted prices over at Dans, so thanks for the clarification Princess Fiona. Think I'm going to have to pass. Got a NZ trip next week and might need some $$ to buy some over there.
