Qantas Wine latest offering

I'm happy to share what I bought after I have done it. Of course, different people with different tastes may wish to buy alternate options - I'lll see if I can dig up a couple of alternates

I went for 3 cases of Squealing Pig, Sav Blanc.....no (extra) bonus points. All up 2,446 (incl CC) points for $305.82

Looking at the best value all up (including bonus points) is either the Chapel Hill Cab Sav $161.94 x 2 ($323), therefore get 6 x 323 + 3,000 bonus (4,938 + CC points):
http://www.qantasepiqure.com.au/win...Cabernet-Sauvignon-2011/?wine-type=Red&page=1

Or the Petaluma Croser @ $119.94 x 2 ($239) therefore 239 x 3 (717 + CC points). Then add the cheapest option (Mad Fish Sideways 2 bottles for $40) to make order above $250, gives 279 x 6 (1,674 + CC points).

The cheapest to meet the $250 hurdle is the Wirra Wirra at $251 and would get 6 x 251 (1,506 points + CC):

My stocks of red were getting a little on the low side...

You, Sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Makes working 12 days more bearable knowing I'll have something to ease the pain come next Friday.

My work colleagues love me.....

Time to gift out some bottles of red to make way for some more bottles of red....

And another dozen white just to make the 4 dozen for the year ;)

Right - it's 11:45am - time to crack another bottle and start making room in the cellar :)

Just been reading through this thread. Judging by the posts, we're either a bunch of sollzled soaks, or Qantas has found the perfect extra for their elite flyers. Possibly both.

There's some serious money being spent on good wine, and some seriously happy customers.

I know when I reach for the Epiqure end of the wine compartment, I'm going to enjoy it, whereas the Cellarmasters stocks are more of a gamble.

I didn 't gave a chance to buy any last week and fear that I have missed the double points offer :o

[EDIT: Found the small print in the "IMPORTANT INFORMATION" section: If Qantas epiQure members spend over $250 in one transaction before 12.59pm AEDT 25 September 2013 the number of Qantas Points earned doubles to 6 Qantas Points per $1 spent. Phew ;) :p)

Ordered completed for the Chapel Hill x 2 :D. My stocks are not dimishing...

Community spirit - alive and well here daturtle.

I ordered the same.
I am not the biggest wine drinker but I have decided that I am going save the best wines and let them mature and savour them at a later date, whilst I enjoy all the bonus points now!

Slightly off topic, I see epicure recommends how long a wine can be left to age till it peaks, but when I google a particular variety, some sites suggest longer whilst other a shorter period. Is their any well to tell?

How long is a piece of string and what kind of string do you like?

There are many factors

* Do you like aged wine or not? Some people do, others don't.
* How is the wine being stored? This is probably that MOST significant factor.
* Every bottle will age differently (especially so under cork).

Aging has very little to do with variety. Aging a rubbish wine isn't going to make it any better either.

I just noticed the 2010 Howard Park Flint Rock Shiraz. Although Margaret River isn't known for Shiraz, this actually isn't a bad drop IMHO.

I paid $96 delivered for 6 bottles back in March, and epiqure wants $119.94, so a little bit of a mark-up, but still reasonable value for an "under-rated" wine.

And it looks like I missed out on more bonus points :(

I need a wine PA to filter through all the deals :p

The short answer is "it depends", and it varies wildly between wines. Even the same wine can vary from vintage to vintage due to factors including the weather / growing conditions, wine-making technique and variations in the blend, etc... As a very general rule - well made wine in a good year tends to cellar better for longer.

As Daver6 says, having an appropriate storage location is a big part of it.

Fortunately for us lay people they provide guidance. Generally a wine can be enjoyed any-time from release until the suggested cellaring year. An hour in a decanter can really help younger wines "open up".

Provenance (cellaring condition) is everything but sometimes even under the best climate controlled environment, a wine can go bad. In my 20 years of buying and holding a small collection, I've had 2 bottles tainted.

I go with the winemakers recommendations generally, rather than any wine site. YMMV. I have a small and dwindling collection of Grange and St Henri, backed by Penfolds wine vintage books - along with some Moss Wood and minor other brands - all in 2 small wine fridges. I'm also fortunate to have a friend (a vintner) to fall back on if I'm really unsure.

I was collecting, however now I drink to enjoy - life is too short. Epicure wines are for me everyday drinking and one (the remnants of a Mule Shiraz) tonight made an excellent base for a beef stroganoff - slow cooked for 8 hours. Ably washes down with a Coldstream Hill Pinor Noir :D, so life is good.

Mmm... Who in my family needs wine?

Who wants to make an order with 10% off? Just got an email "10% off wine & event tickets. 3 days only. Quote promo code WEB10 in your shopping cart. Offer ends 29 September."

Now to trawl the site to see what I need (and bonus points I can pick up at the same time :D)

Hmmm, doesn't look like many (if any) bonus points are available. I thought Thursdays was the day :D (must have decided on just thris discount offer instead).

Offer does not include the Cellar Sale offers:
http://www.qantasepiqure.com.au/sale/?int_cam=au:ff:online:260712:nav:clearancebutton.tx

as I did a dummy order (for the Willunga 100) and got:

Your coupon has not been applied as existing product offers give you a greater discount.

Probably a good thing there are no bonus points around.

Always be careful with bonus points and discounts at the same time. There have been many cases where once the discount code has been applied the bonus points disappear and have not been issued. There has been the odd occasion where people have stated they got both but these are in the minority.

Not got the time to trawl through the thread to provide examples but they are in here.
