thanks to the recent status fast track I’m a new qantas flyer. I’m chronically late, all the time, and was pretty across the absolute latest I could make a flight on VA.

I’ve got a QantasLink flight from Sydney tomorrow, departing at 5:10pm and will
be pushing it with my arrival to the airport. I was wondering what time does boarding usually close and what’s the latest I can arrive?
I’ll be carry on only with online checkin done beforehand.

apologies if this had been asked elsewhere - but I couldn’t find anything, even on the qf website...

I think the QF app may have a personalised timeline if you load your BNK flight booking?

Extract from FAQ:

For domestic flights QF400 and above the following deadlines apply before departure:
  • 30 minutes - check-in closes
  • 25 minutes - boarding starts
  • 12 - 5 minutes - boarding closes and this time may vary between flights. Always check the flight indicator boards in the terminal.
Within a recent e-ticket of mine, there is a reference that "Boarding will commence 20 minutes prior to departure."
By the way, the QF app will also show the boarding status and you can activate push notifications...

If you are flying out of Sydney on a Dash 8, they normally use Gates 16 - 19 which are a way along the terminal, and getting there 25 min prior to flight time is ok, maybe even 5 minutes or so after that. However, if you are boarding from Gate 1C then they take you to the aircraft on the shuttle bus and you wouldn't want to leave it any later 25 min prior - I don't know if they run a second bus for late comers.

Qantas are using a mix of QFLink and QF mainline to Byron as well now.

Becoming a major hub!

Thanks everyone . Flight departing from gate 17. Will arrive at airport at about 4:50 so I think I should be okay.

Go past the 2nd dom security screening point at QF SYD T3, and see if its open that early.
Not the major one.
If you are lucky, and that 2nd security screening point is open that early, ((try OLCI too)), you could veer more towards gate 17 at T3.
If the security screening that I am thinking of is not open that early, then you have to go through the main one, with big huge departure board above your head.
The 2nd one, is more towards the left hand side.
Up to a few months back, there were 2 security screening points at QF SYD T3, unless they have removed it/deactivated it in the past with Covid.
Edit, sorry, I thought it was 5.10 (am), but its 5.10 pm ie 17:10.
Seriously, I would try to get to airport at the least at 4.30 pm/16.30 pm, 4.45 stretching it.

For the purpose of boarding being closed for general public information - it closes 10min prior to departure (for all qantas/link domestic). This is always stated on paper boarding passes too.

Granted that most of the time, the plane will still sit at the gate, for a while with the door still open, and then the announcement they are "finailising paperwork/waiting for the last remaining passenger/final call and unloading procedures have commenced" ***, after official dep (gate) time, I would not play with it.

Its hard to say, what with this Covid bizzo going on, and how many people will be fly domestically from A QF SYD T3.
If you are lucky, and that 2nd security screening point is open, you are on your way, trust me, it will save some time, once you get through that way, keep veering left till you get to gate 15 to 17 range.
If that security screening point I am thinking of is still closed off, you would have to do it at the main security screening point.
If you do have a higher level QFF ((status) but you mention you usually fly VA), card to "show", you could go through premium screening, if that one is open as well, its usually to the left hand side of the plebs one.
They might also have that premium screening closed off, who knows.
Best of luck!
Have used that 2nd screening point several times, good if a person has lounge access, but thats a moot point, as you mentioned you usually fly VA.

I flew to Coffs Harbour today from Sydney and I had no wait at security getting there 30 minutes prior to boarding - admittedly at 6.30am and with only one lane at the main security check point open. Since COVID, I've never seen the 2nd screening point open and only seen more than 1 lane open at the main check point twice one of which was for the Great Southern Land flight - and I fly about once a fortnight.

Being chronically late all the time....would getting up a little earlier be out of the question. just saying!

OP's flight turned out to be pm, ie, afternoon!
I too/took it to be am in the first instance!
Then took a look at the SYD airport website, no QFlink/Qlink flights at 5.15am, unlike BNE/PER without daylight savings.
OP's flight at PM, so 2 people thought it was am!
Heh, ok, back to normal now.
Edit: what was the meal on that flight like?
Coffee/tea/only water?
Or nothing?

Normal beverage service wine, soft drink, snackbox, etc

and in my defence, I did say pm 😂

I admit, I’m not a morning person, but I don’t think it would have helped me for my 5:10pm flight.

Flying QFLink a lot at the moment and it’s hilarious how often my flights are running horrendously early because of no air traffic and they just decide to leave early! It’s brilliant 😁

I most notice how there's never a wait to take-off at SYD and we always use the main runway rather than the parallel one. While leaving early has happened for me we actually took off 30 minutes later due to an engineering issue.

I'd forgotten what was like to be delayed although was less stressful than having 7 hour delays on SYD-SCL back to back (I mean both there and back) as I did last year.
