QantasLink launches 2 new routes [ADL-NTL & BNE-WGA]

For the first time, Qantas is launching direct ADL-NTL flights flown by Alliance.

It's not a new route however, having previously been a FlyPelican route that was also operated by Alliance.

IMO, the Qantas route has much greater chance of success, with seamless connections to PER / DRW / ASP etc and also a lot of Defence business between Williamtown and Woomera.

FlyPelican was always a strange choice for the route.

Now with flights to three capital cities - QF will have to start thinking hard about a QP in NTL (the airport already has a space designated for it).

QANTASLINK HAS ANNOUNCED TWO NEW ROUTES IN ANTICIPATION OF A BOOM IN INTERSTATE HOLIDAYS EARLY NEXT YEAR.

From 28 March, the national carrier’s regional service will offer direct services between Wagga Wagga and Brisbane and between Adelaide and Newcastle.

The new Wagga Wagga route will provide Riverina travellers with direct flights to Queensland for the first time in four years while the services between Newcastle and Adelaide will be the only service connecting the two wine regions.


The two new routes will save travellers 90 minutes and two hours respectively compared with flying via Sydney.

The Wagga Wagga service will be operated on the airline’s 74 seat, Q400 turboprop aircraft, while the Newcastle service will operate using QantasLink’s E190 regional jet aircraft with both routes operating three weekly return flights.

The new routes come as Qantas celebrates the take-off of a new Tasmanian service.

On Monday, the airline began operating direct flights between Brisbane and Launceston for the first time to help meet the increasing demand for travel to Tasmania.

Rex can’t whine on these two at least.

Maybe QF are taking Bonza semi seriously, and want to get in first before Bonza launches. ADL-NTL possibly a good Bonza target - between two population centres of 1m and 0.5m seemed the sort of route that Bonza are taking about.

Only 3x weekly is a bit of a problem. I think they'd have to add Sunday services at least to make this viable.

Yes interesting point… and with all the E190’s lined up they can quite quickly throw some new routes out there, move the 717 and prop fleet around to get ready…

Interesting it says "The new routes have been made possible with the support of Adelaide Airport, Newcastle Airport, Destination NSW and the South Australian Tourism Commission". Ie, it's getting subsidies for the route.

NTL has a history of subsidising routes that ultimately fail.

Those times are not the best.

I would imagine a lot of leisure travel and whichever direction your going makes it hard to have it as a long weekend

I really think this is getting in before Bonza.

The dream of many. In every survey, i get sent I list this. But with it all being O and D traffic it seems unlikely

The Wagga / Brissy route is interesting, it’s great for our regional sales team, I wonder how much other business it will pick up…

I don't think it's unlikely at all.

Quite a lot of smaller airports that have QPs.

It's already on the master plan for the airport. It will happen, question is when.

The Newcastle Inner City Bypass was first planned in the 1950s so in true Newcastle fashion im not holding my breath.

And i say that as a born and bred Novocastrian. ;-)

Whilst I do really like the E190’s and wish that VA had them I must say my last two trips with QF on the E190 have been pretty average but I think that’s more to do with the purse strings at QF being tightened. Will no doubt have a work trip in NTL next year so hope the route is still in operation

Given Wagga has two military training bases (Army and RAAF) and Brisbane is close to other military locations, as well as being convenient to transfer to DRW I can see a bit of potential in the routing.

Funny enough VA often flew E190s on the BNE-NTL route.
