Qatar to Qatar through check baggage

Hi there, first post in a while...

I’ve seen numerous posts about Qatar interlining with other airlines on separate bookings. But I was hoping someone might have recent experience of a QR to QR connection on separate tickets.

I found availability for MEL-DOH and DOH-BRU in J for June next year, using Velocity points. Unfortunately, you can't book international multi-city flights on the Velocity website, and entering MEL-BRU returned no J seats. So I called Virgin. The CSO said she could see the availability, but the booking team could not and would not book them into a single ticket or PNR (or even two separate bookings). She suggested I try to book them online, as separate bookings, which I successfully did.

We are due to arrive in DOH at 10.45pm and fly out to BRU at 9.20am the following morning. Given, it's a 10+ hour layover, we have booked the airside Oryx hotel for the night to get some sleep and start fresh the next day. If we need to exit and collect our luggage and re-enter and re-check our luggage, I assume we will have to wait until check-in opens for our flight to BRU the next morning.

Previously, I would be confident that the QR staff at check-in in MEL would tag or our bags through to BRU and issue both boarding passes, even on separate tickets. I have done so in the past. But there seems to be some conjecture about this in more recent threads. Can anyone provide recent experience or advice?

I’m flying VA from SYD to ADL and then QR ADL to DOH.

I’ve previously researched and it seems most unlikely that they will check me through when I am in SYD but I’m still going to ask!

I do not think they can check you through due to immigration rules.

I have previously tried this with QR and was not checked through. I did NTL-BNE and then BNE-DOH. I was told they can not check through bags for International travels.

Worth a shot tho

I also spoke with QR who said that they won't connect domestic and international PNR's anymore

Both of my flights are international and both with QR, so fingers crossed they will link them or at the very least check our baggage through to our final destination.

Very frustrating that Virgin was not able to book them into a single ticket. But they are in J on points, so can't really complain.

I went on to the actual website and if you go to the benefits section it’s there as plain as day

It was apparently removed a few months back. Which is what led to my question in the forum. I guess I’ll find out one way or another, and be able to report back.

Thanks bcworld. It seems that’s a cached version. If you go direct to the QR website, the check through element is no longer there. It’s certainly causing a lot of confusion.

That is an old page that is still alive but not linked to from the rest of the QR website. That page still has references to S7, AB (the old AB) and LA being in oneworld. AB went out of business in 2017.

As a recent datapoint, just last week I flew BNE-DOH and DOH-LHR on separate tickets (first ticket was booked through QR and second ticket through VA). There was no issue at BNE with me being checked through and I did not even need to give them my second ticket number, the check-in agent was able to locate all information on his end.

Hi DAC1, thank you so much for that. Very glad to hear of your positive experience. Here's hoping the check-in agents in MEL will do the same. I contacted QR, who suggested we ask at check-in, but wouldn't say whether they would check us through or not. Your recent experience shows they can, let's just hope they will.

That is an international to International transfer. If you are transferring from domestic to international, they will not be able to check your luggage through due to immigration laws

Thanks masco131. Ours is also international to international, MEL-DOH DOH-BRU. So hopefully they will do it.

What law are you talking about?

If it’s on separate tickets, the ability to through-check is generally governed by airline policy.

There are some countries (like Australia and the US) where on an international to domestic connection (not domestic to international), there’s not much practical benefit in through checking on separate tickets because you need to pick any checked luggage up, clear customs and then re-check/drop off the luggage.
