The route map in part b of the manual is a little sad when comparing the state of the international network to today.

Great read though, thanks for linking.

Very sad. Back then Qantas was a grand international airline serving around 30 overseas destinations, today it flies to barely more than a dozen. In a decade it will probably be just a handful. :(

QFT!

No way I would enjoy flying at all if smoking was still allowed on board!

Although I do see the irony of being addicted to flying :D

Not advocating smoking but I think serfty or NM has remarked here previously that they now recycle the air in the cabin rather than drawing in fresh air which has actually reduced air quality in the cabins.

That's a hangover from the old days and is incorrect, typically these days cabin air is a 50:50 mix of recycled and fresh. It was only ten years ago I was catching CX flights ex TPE that were smoking, it was like an instant fog on takeoff! In that case, I believe the mix was changed to include more fresh air.

Looks crazy doesn't it!! Do any of our older (I mean: experienced) members remember being able to smoke inflight?

yup. I used to smoke with the Garuda crew in the galley of their 744s from Bali to Amsterdam. The galley runs down the left side of the aircraft between doors 1 and 2, at one end of the galley is the biz class cabin (zone A), at the other end is economy. (Same configuration as Thai Airways' 747s today)

We were smoking one time and several pax in economy were looking on completely horrified. I pointed this out to the crew who promptly went and shut the curtain. 'Problem solved' she said.

That being said I never used to like sitting in a smoking area. Too smelly. I was on another flight (still Garuda) and sitting with one other passenger in the forward A zone (which had previously been used for First class and was fitted with 18 First class sleeper seats).

I felt like a smoke after dinner so excused myself and went into the cabin behind. This was a small cabin, just on the right of the wall separating that cabin off from the galley (where thai has their downstairs biz cabin now)

That was the designated smoking section for premium economy class. (It in turn used to be the old 'business class - 6 rows of 2+2 seats at a 42' pitch).

I lit up and all of a sudden there were these hands reaching up for the call button. Cabin attendants came running and questions were asked about why was there someone smoking? The reply was, of course, that this was the designated smoking zone and if anyone didn't like it then they could go upstairs - which several couples of people did.

I went back to my seat and the purser came to ask me why I had gone down there to smoke - I replied that I didn't like the smell and I might disturb my fellow passenger.

She said 'how thoughtful of you - I wish all our passengers were as considerate as you!'

I then said that there were a lot of people who didn't agree with her and had just left to go upstairs. Her reply: 'don't worry about them! - they're all honeymooners and have all been upgraded. Can I get you some more champagne?'

Good ol' Garuda.
