You forgot to mention the A350 XWB which is still under development or has this been scrapped?

I'm sure they will fill in the gaps in due course. After the A350 will come the A360.....

No, I did not forget it at all. The A380 was numbered and announced even before the original A350 (A330 on steroi_s) and long before the A350XWB. So the A380 skipped from A340 straight to A380.

I flew MEL-to LAX Monday on the A380 (in J) and came back Wed night on the 747 (in J) - ie arrived back this morning. The A380 was not due to leave LAX until FRI. So at checkin at LA Wed night there were many excited passengers. Also, both the business and first lounges at LAX was overfull - passengers were being sent to the star alliance lounge and one family was sitting on the floor in the J lounge.

I know there will be some disappointed pax on Fri night who thought they were on the A380 from LAX to SYD. The guy next to me on the plane out on Monday was returning to MEL via SYD Fri night just so he return also on the A380.

From speaking to crew I think QFs issue at the moment is that not enough crew (non - flight crew - ie CSM down) are trained to work in the A380 - ie no melbourne based crew have yet been trained.

The crew I had on Monday out was a brand new crew - ie it was their first ever flight. It took them 6 hours to get lunch out but nobody minded as everyone was excited about new aircraft. All drink and meal choice orders are taken on PDAs which then beam the orders back to the galley - this is in theory faster as someone in galley can immediately begin preparing as soon as order comes in.

I must say that the experienced crew in the B747 are much more personable than the newbies on the A380. QF has award/union issues which mean that 95% of crew on the A380 will be first time international crew - many have come from domestic or are new intakes.

 QF12 departing LAX on Wednesday was to have been operated by the 388.

Did the 388 operate QF94 instead or stay in LAX for QF12 this Friday?

I think due to the crew issues, SYD-LAX this week on the A380 was rescheduled to Friday. Crew on MEL-LAX A380 Mon (QF93) were not supposed to return until Friday - they had all planned breaks in US - ie mexico, las vegas, canada etc. Perhaps QF got another crew over from SYD and Wed flight was then reinstated. I am only relaying what I was told. It was of no personal interest to me as I was returning LAXto MEL Wed night on the 747.

A380 operated LAX-SYD leaving Wed night much to joy of some pax I overheard at LAX - in fact there was a whole tour group of US tourists whose tour leader was telling them about the 'change'.

SYD-LAX on a Friday is the scheduled A380 service - so nothing unusual about that

Yes - this is the extra flight

It seems to be operating MEL-LAX on a WED turning around doing LAX-SYD on a WEd also, however these changes are not published

Heads up on this given by a A388 rated QF FA on FT ... who posted they declined the offer of an extra 388 trip to LAX this week ...

There are no crew issues with the A380 - There are so many crew sitting around waiting for work for just one aircraft, so that is certainly not the problem. A380 crew are are dedicated and loose certification on the rest of the long haul fleet. What the problem for the crew on the QF94 on Monday was that their layover in Los Angeles was reduced because Qantas added an extra service to LAX from MEL on Wednesday returning to SYD. So instead of leaving Friday and going to Canada and Mexico they left on Wednesday instead after just 60 hours. The QF11/12 on Friday is still A380 as well. This service was a nice bonus and hopefully there will be more of them.

I don't know where you got 95% but I can tell you most of the crew that have transferred to the A380 are not new. Many have come from short haul which included a lot of international flying, Auckland and London and about 20% are crew from Qantas Long Haul with many years of service.

I've been hearing this 'new' business a lot. New to the aircraft sure but so are the crew that have been flying 30 years. While all the crew have been on the aircraft doing test flights at least for another week or so it will be their first service. There is a lot of storage onboard and will take a little while for crew to get familiar to their new office.

Melbourne based crew have been trained as well.

When do QF receive their next A388?

O/T: Why is it called a A380-800 when it is the first A380, should it not have been a A380-100:confused:

ejb
I was on a harbour cruise in Hamburg last Monday night, which went past (a few times actually) the Airbus facility where they do the final fitout of the A380s, and got a very good view of what I assume is the next QF A380 sitting inside.

After each SYD-LAX-SYD or MEL-LAX-MEL it ferries to either SYD or MEL empty for the next flight.

It arrives back in SYD from LAX [QF12] on the Sunday morning - but can anyone give me a definitive time when it shuttles to MEL, in preparation for QF93 departure on Monday?

Unofficial Qantas Group Fleet Information

Thanks for the above flight times WD. I have been keen to find out this info for weeks now.

Is the Sunday morning flight to Mel still running at the same time listed?
Is the time of the Wednesday morning Mel to Syd empty flight known at this stage?
