Hi Everybody, I had a AA award booked with QF from SFO-LAX-SYD. I just had an email from QF changing the SFO-LAX leg, this will only give me 54 minutes transit time in LAX.

I'm not to sure what I should do here so would welcome your advice. is 54 mins enough? and if its not what's the best course of action ?

The transit is all airside at LAX.

It likely meets MCT (minimum connection time) unless you are arriving into the AeAgle's nest.

In any case I would not be happy with that since SFO often has delays that late at night.

What is your SFO Flight number?

It’s AA2165 for the SFO-LAX then onto AA73 for LAX-SFO.

I’m just not comfortable with such a short connection but I don’t know what my options are ?

54 minutes should be ok, there’s no outbound border control or passport checks. It’s moving from one gate to the other.

In the event you miss connect, AA is responsible for arranging alternative transport, in the class of service booked. This could be on another carrier as well.

At worst, you’ll be 24 hours later and get a an extra day in LA for free. AA is across these short connections, they’ll look after you.

So this is AA-AA at LAX with too short a connection time ?

The MCT at LAX is 1:30.
When is this trip ?
I think that the notification you have received is an automatic reschedule one and the proper rebooking hasn’t occurred yet.

If the flights are soon, call QF, otherwise wait it out for a bit and it will probably get corrected.

Yes it’s AA-AA and in July this year

Seems a bit tight. Have you accepted the flight change, or do you have no say in the matter?

You may be arriving at LAX at about the time of Go-to-Gate for the LAX-SYD flight. Maybe wear your runners for the connection. ;) There’s nothing quite like the adrenalin rush when you can’t be sure whether the flight will close prior to you arriving at the gate.

Anyway, if you make the flight and any checked bags don’t, they will be on-forwarded to SYD anyway.

On the positive side, you may actually make the flight.

Yes, but the OP is going the other way… D->I. I believe MCT for that is just 45mins?

AA isn’t offering the OP’s flights however… they are recommending the earlier SFO connection. But not sure if QF reservations will be able to change unless it actually breaches MCT.

EF seems to be having trouble finding AA2165 on the route SFO-LAX? Not sure why. That’s definitely the route isn’t it?

No its 1:30 D:I according to EF ?

I'm having trouble finding that flight for the route in July.

What sort of aircraft is operating the SFO flight?
Which begs the question what’s QF MMB showing???

Not sure how authoritative this is but it suggests 2.5 hrs D2I but that might allow for a terminal change?
I’d certainly be happy with 1.5 hrs same terminal.

When AA makes a change like this as long as you can find an alternative you like and there's reasonable space on it they can change you onto it.

But finding someone on QF ticketing that understands your request without destroying your whole itinerary may be a whole other thing.

Edit: AA is likely changing some of their summer schedule up again. I just got notified that my SEA - LAX was changed as well (from 9am to 5pm) and in the space of 4 hours, the 5pm flight changed from 7pm (connection time of 1.5h) to 5pm as that got retimed too.

My original flight got retimed from 9am to 7am.

That’s confusing. FT mentions 45mins for D-I, and 1:30 for I-D.

I have found other flights on the AA website with the connection to the AA73 under 90 mins (1:15, 1:11 etc). So MCT must be under 90 mins.
Ignoring all the suppressed entries, EF has:

STANDARD.D/D...D/I...I/D...I/I.
ONLINE 1.10 1.30 2.00 2.00
OFFLINE 1.10 1.30 2.00 2.00

AA-AA DI .40

So other than a host of flights to Canada, AA-AA DI MCT is 40 minutes. The 1 hour 30 minutes is the airport standard, applicable if the airlines don't have other specifics.

Thank you for all of your useful guidence. So in summary I won’t have any recourse with QF and I’m stuck with the short connection (and I need to buy a pair of running shoes) ?

If the inbound is likely to land at the AeAgles nest (E.G. Embraer) then the MCT is (IIRC) 1:15 for D (AA)->I (AA).

The correct MCT for D to I at LAX on AA to AA, even from the eagle's nest, is 40 mins.

The terminals are right next to each other, so only a short walk, like 5 mins or so depending where your incoming lands.

If you were anything but terminals 4 or 5 you’re starting to look at longer walks.
