QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

Jetstar today announced it would introduce four flights a week from Sydney to Ayers Rock (Uluru)^ providing low fares travel to one of Australia’s most popular tourism destinations.
To mark the start of services to the Red Centre, Jetstar will be offering special sale fares of $119* one way from Sydney to Ayers Rock (Uluru).
Jetstar Australia & New Zealand chief executive officer David Hall said the start of low fares to the region would help drive further tourism growth.

Jetstar to start flights to Australia's Red Centre from June

Re: Jetstar Replacing Qantas Mainline , Sydney-Ayers Rock

They wont replace QFlink, 717s are cheaper and carry similar pax!

There goes a good JASA BTW

Re: Jetstar Replacing Qantas Mainline , Sydney-Ayers Rock

Did I read this correctly in that this is cutting the QF route altogether? or will QF and JQ co-exist on this route?

Edit- Markis bet me too it, you answered my question just before I posted!

Re: Jetstar Replacing Qantas Mainline , Sydney-Ayers Rock

I bet international tourists will be impressed when they find out they can't check luggage all the way through from AYQ to go home via SYD or CNS and so forth.

I guess they have to do something with the A320s now that there will be no RedQ.

If I go to AYQ again I guess I'll take QF to ASP and drive (don't QFlink also service ASP-AYQ?)

Re: Jetstar Replacing Qantas Mainline , Sydney-Ayers Rock

Very disappointing to see another route handed over to the Orange Cancer, and once again, Tourist bosses lauding it as another successful introduction of a service, without potentially fully understanding what is being lost. I wonder if they even realise that the Qantas service is being dropped... they didn't in CNS when JQ announced an "increase" in services... while QF services were dropped.

Its a 4 hour drive is it worth it to avoid jetstar ? You could fly virgin

re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

Was planning a trip to AYQ this year.......hello Virgin!

And what happened to the whole rumour that EK would not allow its customers to be booked onto JQ?

Sad yes if QF are pulling out but more interesting to me is where is the QF bird going? No 800s leaving anytime soon, and there are orders on the books to replace the final 400s. I have a haunch an OOL-MEL might be around the corner, or an expansion of OOL-SYD. Loads have been very strong and with all the promotion lately you get the feeling they are wanting to really get that market going.

Looks like QF844/845 CBR-DRW has been canned too, just saw an article on the agents site...

Yep, with some interesting comments:

The Sydney-Ayers Rock route has been un-profitable for Qantas for a number of years with flights in both directions departing with up to 40 per cent of seats empty. Qantas will continue to operate direct daily flights to Ayers Rock from Alice Springs and Cairns. Passengers wishing to travel between Sydney and Ayers Rock on Qantas services can do so on daily services via Alice Springs.

Obviously public service and defence travel isn't enough...what are they doing with that 738?

Re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

I think the SYD-AYQ is another short-sighted cut by QF, 40 % empty seats on the 737-8's 156 Y & 12 J seats minus 40% is 100 seats, why couldn't they have just made it a QF Link route SYD-AYQ with a 717 with 115 seats then suddenly it would be only 12% spare seats or 88% full.
If there are no spare 717's left then they need to lease more or buy some more smaller size aircraft...

Also they should have factored in they may get increased tourists from overseas fed in by EK.

Arghhh, I was actually planning on going to Uluru later in the year for the first time, but now maybe not, don't want to sit on JQ for 3+hours.

717s have 125 config in addition to 115 and most are being converted to the higher density, you always have the option to stay in ASP and catch a 717.

[h=1]Qantas pulls Darwin to Canberra leg[/h]CLAYTON BENNETT | February 11th, 2013

TERRITORY politicians will have to pay for their meals and movies when they fly to Canberra from April with Qantas flights being replaced by Jetstar.
The Qantas Group has announced that the airline will cease to run flights between Darwin and Canberra due to a lack of demand.
It will cancel flights from Sydney to Uluru from June which will also be replaced by Jetstar, the first time the budget carrier will fly to the rock.
Jetstar will fly to Uluru from June 4, commencing four flights per week from Sydney on its Airbus A320.
Qantas Domestic Executive Manager Sales, Marketing and Distribution Steve Limbrick said the Sydney-Uluru route had been un-profitable for Qantas for a number of years with flights in both directions departing with up to 40 per cent of seats empty.
Qantas will continue to operate direct daily flights to Uluru from Alice Springs and Cairns. Qantas will continue to operate services from Canberra to Darwin via Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

I find it amazing that the Jetstar press release flags extra capacity when they are turning 7 flights per week into 4...

As for CBR-DRW, it doesn't look as the QF were really even trying. They had one flight a week and it was never on sale.

You would rather drive ASP-AYQ than catch JQ????? That's a big call, we all dislike jetstar but surely that's extreme

Isn't one of the problems for QFlink the fact that the 717 is no longer in production?

Not when there is a stack of them in the desert, with low milage, including the last one ever built complete with One World painting scheme, which is why they are getting more!
