QF axes DRW-CBR, JQ replaces QF on SYD-AYQ

Re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

I find it strange that they would cut the SYD-AYQ route in June, when that is typically the start of peak season for travel to AYQ. They could have withdrawn the service after September or October. Well, looks like Virgin will be the go in future for travel to AYQ.

Re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

QF is still flying to AYQ though, I think some people have overlooked that. From SYD, you'll fly SYD-ASP, and then ASP-AYQ, both on QF. What's been axed is the direct SYD-AYQ. And by connecting in ASP, you get additional status credits! ;)

When I went to AYQ quite some years ago, the only way you could do it was via ASP!!

Re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

It may indeed assist with status credits although y only on asp-ayq. Obviously fare rules will change to allow the additional connection. Could work out well. How long is the transit .. anybody checked ?

MEL-ASP-AYQ is a 2:45 transit, and SYD-ASP-AYQ is 1:25

Hmmm, I noticed EK has a codeshare ( EK5728 ) on SYD-AYQ route, so QF will loose business on this route once the EK partnership is launched.

S.h.o.r.t.s.i.g.h.t.ed! ;)

Re: QF cancels SYD-AYQ, CBR-DRW, JQ steps in for AYQ

1. I still want to know what they'll be doing with the 738 I assume they were using on this route. Is the fleet really that short of planes?

2. When you say 717s are sitting in the desert, do you mean that place in California/Nevada/where ever it is where planes basically go to rot in the dust? QFlink might as well buy them all and put them to use making money on routes like this.

I agree. My only op-ups ever were SYD-AYQ-SYD, cabin 100% full. This was last June. On another note, I just called QF to make new arrangements for my DRW-CBR in June...this only one week after I had to call QF because they swapped a 738 service on PER-BME with a 717 without J. Looks like I have to call QF every week for cancelled flights...
One of the only reason I stay with QF is because of the domestic upgrades with points, if QF start scrapping all J services to CNS, DRW, BME, ASP I think I will simply change FF program for AA or CX!

If the 787 delays are that bad why can't we lease some 777s short-term? Or some 748s as compensation from Boeing?

A BNE-SYD-AYQ flight use to be about $289 one way. Since the announcement, a BNE-SYD-ASP-AYQ or BNE-CNS-ASP-AYQ flight starts at $410. Yes, maybe a dozen more SC's but I'd rather the direct route than take a whole day to get to the red centre...

1. Availability (where do you get decent 777s at short notice).
1a. It's a much larger aircraft than a 788

2. See 1a.
2a. A small number of 748s would be un-economic long term.

Obviously public service and defence travel isn't enough...what are they doing with that 738?

I don't think the CBR/DRW flight had a huge amount of ADF traffic & what traffic they do have can be redirected via SYD/MEL/ADL or BNE.

Qantas pulls Darwin to Canberra leg

CLAYTON BENNETT | February 11th, 2013

TERRITORY politicians will have to pay for their meals and movies when they fly to Canberra from April with Qantas flights being replaced by Jetstar.
The Qantas Group has announced that the airline will cease to run flights between Darwin and Canberra due to a lack of demand. It will cancel flights from Sydney to Uluru from June which will also be replaced by Jetstar, the first time the budget carrier will fly to the rock. Jetstar will fly to Uluru from June 4, commencing four flights per week from Sydney on its Airbus A320.

Qantas Domestic Executive Manager Sales, Marketing and Distribution Steve Limbrick said the Sydney-Uluru route had been un-profitable for Qantas for a number of years with flights in both directions departing with up to 40 per cent of seats empty. Qantas will continue to operate direct daily flights to Uluru from Alice Springs and Cairns. Qantas will continue to operate services from Canberra to Darwin via Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Yet another journalistic masterpiece which demonstrates how media fail to grasp what's really happened. I don't recall any announcement about new JQ flights replacing QF with non-stop DRW/CBR flights & even if they did, do they really think any pollies would fly JQ non-stop DRW/CBR when they could fly via ADL,BNE or SYD in J on QF?

Even if Territory pollies flew SYD/AYQ for work their PA's would just book them via ASP so they could fly QF in J. I can't see any pollie putting their hand in their pocket for inflight meals or movies any time soon to any JQ destination.

If the 787 delays are that bad why can't we lease some 777s short-term? Or some 748s as compensation from Boeing?

Perhaps Airbus would get upset if they did.

That will be a nice surprise for international pax who believe they are flying QF to the red centre.

only a surprise if they don't do their research.

What's to research? As far as they're concerned if it's a Qantas flight number it's a Qantas aeroplane.

Even if it's booked as a JQ flight number people don't even notice that as they assume if it's booked on the Qantas website it's a Qantas aeroplane.

There are going to be a lot of unhappy people. Not sure what the contigency plans will be when JQ cancel a flight with no QF metal as backup on the route.

Re: QF Replaced by JQ Sdney to Ayers Rock

Yes it will be an very unpleasant surprise for overseas visitors, especially for those whom used travel agents, or those that aren't totally "au fait" with the whole JQ/QF codesharing agreement, which they wouldn't often be, seeing as they don't live in Australia.... looks like a big two fingered salute to the tourist operators at Uluru to me (whom were incidently bitterly complaining about the QF services and prices seen at Uluru a few weeks ago ).
