QF Dom - Int separate tix. International BP available at Dom checkin?

I ought to know this but can’t find anything around the Interwebs or here on AFF (although I’m sure it’s been answered many times).

I’m looking to redeem a MEL-SYD-DPS award with HLO. However, due to Qantas’ customer unfriendly but profit maximising married segment logic, they won’t offer me both flights on the same ticket. However, I can redeem two separate awards at a higher rate and greater inconvenience.

So the question is, if I redeem or even book a separate paid Qantas ticket for the MEL-SYD leg and show the domestic lounge dragons my onward SYD-DPS ticket, can/will they issue me the International boarding pass? I know Qantas need you to checkin in person to verify passport and check adherence to other destination specific requirements, and I assume Dom checkin or Lounge can perform this? The primary reason for asking is because I’ve planned for five hours transit in SYD to maximise my QF Flounge time. But if I can’t get my International BP until 3 hrs prior at SYD checkin, I’ll reduce the transit time.

QF will allow check in and bag connections for QF to QF separate bookings.

You can just check in at MEL for the entire trip and they will give you both boarding passes.

Not a problem. Just make sure you go to the domestic special check in desk and give them your details. Don't do this at the lounge as I believe they have to be done by the check in staff.

I’m travelling with Hand Luggage Only (HLO) on this occasion. But that Agency Connect website is invaluable with loads of other tidbits. I will spend some time pottering around there for general knowledge.

It begs the question though, why wouldn’t Qantas include this type of information on their regular customer facing website.

It is

What if I am travelling on separate tickets?
  • If you are travelling on oneworld flights on separate tickets/bookings you are not eligible for through check -in (except if you have a reward or commercial booking and advise airport staff at check-in)
  • For QF/QF and QF/EK flights on separate tickets/booking will through check-in and boarding pass will be issued
  • Allow enough time to collect your baggage, clear customers and re-check in with your airline.

When I enter any terms that match my situation like “collect international boarding pass on domestic leg with separate tickets” etc into the Qantas Help search box, none of the results that appear match or even seem relevant.

But if I click through on the first result that the search tool offers entitled “Baggage with connecting flights”, I get the answer you have quoted. And understanding of Baggage with connecting flights is not at all what I’m after.

Most people would ignore that first option and keep looking for a while until after exhausting all of the Qantas answers, give up with the Qantas “help” feature and end up researching elsewhere. Very few would dare call the infamous Qantas South African and Fijian call centres only to be told the wrong thing, be promised someone will call you back (but never do), or worse still get hung up on because it was all too hard for them.

Anyone has any success with interlining from QF to BA on separate PNRs? I had to book the tickets separately to make sure I got the BA seats the day they were released. I can always try and call up and get the PNRs connected but the question raised by the OP was a timely one for me to jump in on first.

If you're not carrying bags just check in online. I expect they assume most people will do that if they don't have bags. I think it's quite a minority of people who travel overseas without bags - with QF anyway when it's free.

Checking in online with HLO doesn’t solve the problem or address my question. Once again, my question has nothing to do with carrying bags or not. It’s about whether Qantas will issue a BP upon domestic checkin for an onward International connection on separate tickets.

But you could get both of those boarding passes online before you leave home. I'm not sure what the issue is, and once you have the digital BP it stands to reason any QF airport agent could reprint it for you.

Further to that, since you need to walk past the QF checkin kiosks in SYD, presumably you can print a BP there if for some reason they won’t / can’t in MEL.

Ah - that's a false assumption. It used to be the case during covid, not now (although that might apply to some pax/destinations depending on their documentation).

Yeah, I’m aware of OLCI. But doesn't some party along the line like immigration and security etc require a physical BP and not just a mobile boarding pass?

And if I do need a physical BP from a staffed counter somewhere, I’m not keen on the customer experience proposition. Ever since AJ cut ground staffing to the bone, a potentially lengthy wait just to get a physical BP seems far from ideal.

So Qantas no longer needs to cite you and swipe your passport at the airport for International travel to Bali? When did that change? Presumably the only party checking your passport at the airport would then be Immigration if Qantas doesn’t any more.

OLCI will issue a BP if everything is good to go. The Smartgates will check that when you present your PP. Then on your way.

No, not ex-AU anyway. Most countries are using mobile BPs these days, including the TSA (actually you don't even have to show them a BP now, as they get it from your passport / ID). Garuda has mobile BPs so I assume that's case on the return as well.

I think QF stopped the 100% checks at some point this year. I checked in online for QF8 in June. I don't know specifically about Indonesia but you should only need to front the desk if you don't have the right to enter (eg you hold a passport from a non-visa waiver country). The checks should happen automatically based on your passport details.

The checks are all digital with the APIS information you enter beforehand. The only physical checks are through the smart gates at passport control.

Checks for Indonesia stopped midnight 10 June. I flew to CGK 11 June!

If Qantas is now allowing HLO pax to OLCI for International journeys without human interaction at a checkin counter, that’s great news! I’ll triple check with the MEL check in desk staff nevertheless just be safe.

On the flip side, for those travelling with luggage, OLCI mobile BPs are a nice to have but somewhat irrelevant since you’d need to checkin at the counter anyway and you could get all BPs then and there (assuming QF-QF).

We flew out a few days ago to YVR. First time since precovid I was issued an in app BP doing OLCI.
