Hi,

I am traveling Adl - Syd on Thursday arriving at 1030 then departing Syd - Mel at 1700.

I was just wondering if it was possible to either:

Check my bags all the way through to Melbourne when checking-in in Adelaide (and the bags are held in the secure luggage area in Sydney i.e. not waiting on the carousel!); or

Check my bags to Sydney, collect and then do a bag drop/check-in for my later flight...

So i don't have to carry my luggage whilst stopping in Sydney for a short meeting.

Thanks for your help and any advice you can provide...

PZ

It may work for you and it may not. I'd approach it in ADL with heading up to the counter and saying "Heading to Melbourne via Sydney" and showing itinerary or FF Card. If the bag is tagged correctly, then it isn't your issue! :)

At the least, there is a (paid) baggage storage place near Baggage Belt 5 in T3 if they refuse to check it through. Not sure of their opening hours or costs.

A couple of years ago, I had an Intl flight into SYD (early morning) followed by a late afternoon domestic flight. I went to International connections, and they put my bag into standby (but grumbled a little). I had to advise Qantas when I returned to the airport to get my bag out of storage.

So it can be done... but will you find someone wanting to do it?

Thanks for that advice Mal.

As you suggest, I will try my best to get them to ticket the bag all the way through to Melbourne... (I presume that if this is done, it is held 'behind closed doors' in Sydney awaiting my flight... correct?)

If that doesn't work, at least i can pay a little and leave it in storage in Sydney...

Thanks heaps for your quick reply.

It will sit in a pile of baggage in Syd (airside) for later flights. Just make sure you get/check your baggage tag to ensure it has been checked through.

Most check-in agents i find are rather good and actually show you the tag, and say all the way to <airport>. And you confirm. Maybe thats just my luck or premium check-in but seems to happen a lot with all airlines when i check in.

I have recently done SIN-HKG-DLC on CX+KA and return, both times with overnight in HKG and both times they could even check it all the way though being less than 24hrs in HKG, needless to say i was happy since i could just take my small back pack with me to the hotel in HKG and not have the stress of bags.
