I can confirm this is a nice thing we do !
There are a number of processes (unpublished) that occur when a member is due to be downgraded to the tier below, including looking at prior flying.
If you get retained this way and then make it yourself anyway the system will change to reflect that the retain was via reaching the required Status credits.
