Hi Everyone,

Normally I fly J and usually on *A members such as SQ and NZ - for the first time in a very long time I am flying longhaul in Y and on QF, which will be an experience to savour I am sure. Some questions that I have are:

- Are spirits served in QF Y or just beer and wine?
- Is the alcohol only served during meals or can I "ring the bell" and get another?
- The QF website only displays the movie options available on AVOD, but presumably there will be other options such as TV shows and a flight-map?
- No snack packs available on these legs? (website mentions only on 10+ hr flights)
- Is there any power in Y for my laptop?
- Is the Qantas Club in HKG any good?

...I guess I am trying to evaluate my expectations prior to the flight. Thank god I will have QC in SYD and HKG!

Cheers

I'll answer as best as I can.

- I think with the meal, but then $6 each after that.
- You can ring the bell for another.
- Assuming an A333 A388 or 744 yes you will also have TV shows and a flight map, etc.
- I assume you're flying to HKG? If so, probably not.
- Only if flying on an A388, so probably not.
- In comparison to the CX lounges, no. But it's still not too bad.

Thanks for your reply Flashware.

I am slightly on the annoyed side re: $6 for a drink (or, is the charge only for spirits, but beer and wine remain free after the meal?) ...is QF not a full service airline these days? Maybe I've missed a whole decade of Y cabin service downgrades... does CX and SQ charge for drinks in Y?

...regardless, I got the flights for $1196 return each for my partner and I, which isn't too bad a week out from departure (although maybe I should have just paid the extra to go J on China Airlines afterall....)

I thought the plonk was all gratis, but I tend to drink wine/beer, not spirits, so maybe it's different for them.

I think you've nailed the rest ok. QC (The Hong Kong Lounge?) is quite adequate, but by no means great.

I know beer/wine is free, not sure about spirits; the only QF spirits I drink are in the QP beforehand

All Liquor is complimentary on Qantas international flights in all classes.

I can assure you that there is absolutely nothing wrong with flying WHY and you will survive the experience as the overwhelming majority have done for a long time.

Flashware has answered most questions but I will also enter my thoughts.

- Most spirits are served in WHY and they are complimentary. If you happen to have status then champagne and baileys are not out of the question either.
- Ring the bell as many times as you like. I try to get up walk around and get served from different sections of the WHY cabin for various reasons.
- There is a nice variety of movies, TV shows and games to pass the time.
- No snack pack available on shorter long haul flights.
- As far as I am aware only on the A380.
- It is more than adequate but obviously not up to the standard of the CX lounges Wing and Pier.

- Are spirits served in QF Y or just beer and wine?
  • Beer, Wine, Spirits - all complimentary
- Is the alcohol only served during meals or can I "ring the bell" and get another?
  • On SYD/HKG there is generally a drinks service, followed by a meal service. After that you can order more. Ring the bell if you feel like it; I prefer going to the galley to make my request. Note that service may be limited while trolleys are out during drinks/meals/clean-up runs.
- The QF website only displays the movie options available on AVOD, but presumably there will be other options such as TV shows and a flight-map?
  • Unlike CX, there is no main screen entertainment on the 744/333/332/388. It's all AVOD. A selection of TV shows and the flight map are generally available through the AVOD.
- No snack packs available on these legs? (website mentions only on 10+ hr flights)
  • No snack packs. However you can ring the call button and make a request or head to the galley and ask what they have. Note the above comment about limited service during trolley runs.
- Is there any power in Y for my laptop?
  • No!
-Is the Qantas Club in HKG any good?
  • It's OK, not the best around but serves its purpose. Those who can, often head to the CX lounges instead. This option not available via QP membership.

But unfortunately not all liquor is available in all classes ;). For example, you won't find the Dom being offered down the back of the bus unless exceptional circumstances.

Serfty, JohnK & Tuapekastar: Thanks for the info. I had elevated blood pressure there for a minute re: alcohol, but im happy thats sorted. I was hatching plans to buy those $5 bottles of spirits in duty free and getting coke from the galley to make my own drinks in-seat (btw yes I know this is not kosher but I gave it thought!)

NM: The DOM can wait until we arrive at the intercontinental :p am looking forward to the view...

Thanks guys

As a WP i have usually managed if i wanted a drink from J without any questions, they just go and get it, when in J i have after for F drinks and also been provided.

Anyway after dinner and cleanup you can ring the bell or just get up and ask for more drinks, no worries :)
I fly whY in QF all the time and i manage to survive ok ;)

If you only have QF club membership they you can't visit the CX lounges but the QF one is ok. If you have access to the CX lounges as a PG or WP then enjoy it.

All QF A333, A388, B744 have AVOD PTV's and have things like moving maps, but given your HKG you will either be on a B744 or an A333, no A380's on any HKG route just yet and probably not for a while, all the MEL and SYD services to SIN i would imagine will be A380 before any HKG ones.

The other one is not so bad either, and they were renovating when i was there last in the year. Thing is the rates at the IC grand stamford are often cheaper and still a nice hotel :)
But in any case you have the great one, enjoy it !

I think all flights from SYD-HKG and vice versa have 2 meals btw, so a snack pack shouldn't be neccessary.

There will be a snack menu, with cup-a-noodles and fruit and maybe something else also available throughout the flight.

On our PER-HKG we had 2 meals, so assume SYD-HKG would be the same.

Yes, all SYD and BNE-HKG are two meals. One main meal and one light meal.
If you want anything else, you might be lucky if you ask!
