hi there,

I have to get to Yerevan in Armenia in a few weeks. Seems like the most direct way is from Australia (east coast) to Dubai on QF or EK and then Fly Dubai from Dubai to Yerevan.

I am in Brisbane and when I go to book a ticket to Dubai, I am able to book a QF flight number on and EK flight (e.g. QF8435).

I understand that the QF/EK relationship changed recently and so I am wondering what the implications are for QFF members around this - points, status credits, lounge access, upgrade chances etc etc.

If its a 'bad' deal, I'll just go down to SYD and get QF1 to DXB, but that arrives at an ungodly hour into DXB.

Any advice ??

Thanks in advance.

The only change has been for upgrades. Some lucky ones :)consistently scored operational upgrades. That has changed now but that’s all. You could never do a points upgrade on Emirates via QFF although I did hear of a weird case once.

Lounge OK, earn points/credits OK, points upgrades not OK.

ok, so I just can't request an upgrade. other than that, all as if I was on a QF flight number on QF metal.

Why would they change that 'feature' only???

If you want to fly on QF metal to DXB have you considered QF9 from MEL? That leaves late in the evening (so you should be able to get at least a half-day of work in before you leave) and gets into DXB at a better hour of the morning and the loads tend to be lower on QF9 (greater upgrade chance). Note from March 25th QF will no longer fly to DXB.

If it's a QF marketed flight then you should earn QF points and status credits. If EK marketed a reduced number of QF points and no status credits. Check the points earn calculator.

You can't upgrade using QF points on an EK operated flight. Your only chance would be an operational upgrade (e.g. if economy is oversold and they have to bump some people up).

If it's flights that QF codeshares on then they should be flights that you're eligible for lounge access if you would have got if you were flying a QF operated flight, and if you have status (e.g. SG, WP) you should be able to fly on the EK flight number (not that you'd probably want to) and still have lounge access.

That has never been changed. You've never been able to request an upgrade on a QF marketed flight on EK metal. Similarly you can't request an upgrade for an EK marketed flight on QF metal.

No impact on what you're contemplating. You will get the same points and status credits as if you were travelling on a Qantas aircraft.

also, looking at the info on the QF flight booking pages, the EK a380 seems to have a couple more cm of room in cattle class compared to QF.

You’ve never been able to do that. Not a change.

Are the op-ups dead with those changes to upgrade processing to prioritise Flex fares? Mostly fly QF but my last EK flight I was upgraded on 435 DXB-BNE Y->J - about a year or so ago.

Yes, they now process fare paying as opposed to status basis.

If you'd purchased a higher paying fare and had status then I'd suggest a good chance. We have never been upgraded with Qantas as a WP flyer; we have been, multiple times on EK. And a couple of those were 'free' award fares. We haven't flown with them since the changes, about a year ago. And now we seem to be flying on Qatar!

For Op Ups do you know if they differentiate between QFand EK when looking at fare paid? Ie where would a flexible QF ticket sit in the ranking?

I’m not sure it’s been stated anywhere. There are so many factors to take into account. Loading. Status. Length of flight taken and sectors. Fare category. And at the last minute someone might just buy the seat.
