ARTC is quoting at least 12 days until the Adelaide-Kalgoorlie section is reopened. I would probably put an emphasis on at least, given what's been shared on the internet so far in regards to footage and pictures.

It's only Port Augusta to well before Cook (SA) that's flood affected but since there are no 'local' trains, only ones that travel from Port Augusta to Kalgoorlie or Alice Springs/Darwin, the distinction is academic.

Agree it may take longer than officially said. A disaster for WA especially as so much of the supermarket and other goods come by rail from Melbourne and to some extent Sydney or elsewhere, as trucks are far more expensive, and coast-to-coast shipping is rare since COVID struck. (Foreign crews and all that).

The highway through Glendambo (SA) is apparently also badly flood affected, so trucks to Darwin are having to take a huge 3000 kilometre detour via Mt Isa or similar if coming from say Adelaide.

Be eware that the operator Journey Beyond typically doesn't offer refunds, but travel credits, yet when so many trains are booked out, they're hard to use.

The same problems may occur with using QF FF points. Mr McGowan's attitude means the 'IP' still isn't operating as the operator doesn't run it just between Adelaide and Sydney: only Sydney - Adelaide - Perth and vice versa, the full route, even though it could do S-A tomorrow.

With the "Hornblower" group taking over that will most likely happen along with better integration with cruise ship and more tour companies , they already have Qantas frequent flyer onboard.

That'd be a lot of very expensive train travel to earn Platinum.

Not sure why they would bother having their own. Realistically they have their market and they are rusted on, doubt there are many fence sitters thinking about an annual ride on the Indian Pacific that would be swayed by a frequent rail program.

Disappointing! Best value non-flight reward going, which is a shame. Any idea how date changes or refunds would work after 15 December, given there would be non 'classic rail award' availability to change to?
