As I interpret it, something similar is not an uncommon practice for many airlines. But a full refund or other accomodation at no impost to the customer should be a matter of course

That’s not known to the boarder, occasional traveller population and so they will view the ticket price hikes as profiteering and think that untrustworthy, that they will resort to unreasonable prices when they “can get away with it”
What with a $2 billion profit it’s clearly too much to ask for them to re-jig ticket prices for big sporting events

This is a rare case where I have to agree with the airlines.

Supply and demand rules: there are sports fans (of which I am not one) desperate to get to a match, so fares go up hugely accordingly, as do hotel tariffs.

If people don't want to fly or incur a boring drive from Adelaide to Sydney, there's the V/Line 'Speedlink' coach from Adelaide to Albury via Echuca plus NSW TrainLink's Melbourne-Sydney XPT, admittedly not many seats. 'Indian Pacific' tends to be booked out months prior and only operates once a week.

'The Overland' train from Adelaide to Melbourne is only twice a week and not on a suitable day to connect to Sydney for this footy match, but V/Line also operates road coaches from Adelaide to Melbourne via Bendigo: it can be quicker to alight at Horsham and travel on another V/LIne coach to Ararat where there's a train for Melbourne that beats the train from Bendigo in.
 
Two sides to every story, I have not had a miss with a number of parcel posts from Aus Post over a number of years...

From other threads I think experience may vary on how far from cbd you are and if you have a regular postie delivering parcels or an outsourced contractor. Certainly been home several times and no attempt at delivery at all and card left to collect at post-office. Parking was difficult at previous residence and they just did a drive by. A couple of times items just disappeared into the "ether" and had to get a refund from supplier. Once took them a month to deliver something from 10km away.

Did the airfares drop in price the closer to day of flying ?

When you got a duopoly in the industry as most are in Australia you got this pricing behaviour

Free market economy expects competitive prices to cut down the price like the example mentioned of the shirt

You're right there - invariably the final delivery person was not in an Aus Post vehicle or uniform. We live in North Fremantle, and our front entrance is fronted by a portico, and if we are not home, there is a small space to the side that the parcel can be left without being seen.
