QF leaves bags in DFW to make BNE on 1 tank

What about making it like 107 and 108 used to be (ie 1 aircraft all the way through) perhaps going via SFO - getting everybody off, clearing customs and immigration and then continuing on to DFW?

Interesting idea, though as SYD-DFW direct flight is not the issue, the return leg could be via SFO instead of BNE.

I do think leaving behind bags was the best of the available bad options QF had. I think it would be how to best communicate this with affected passengers that's tricky.

Personally I would be over the moon if it was me. No bags to declare at zoo like customs arrival in SYD, trying to push my trolley through the masses, bags delivered to my door step, yes please!

Pre-boarding DFW announcement to pax: either all of you take a dump, or we'll dump some of your luggage.

LOL - I can see this being a new norm for a LCC (instead of paying to use the toilet in the air, get priority luggage if you use the toilet BEFORE you get in the air)!

In all seriousness, and on a completely non baggage related matter.. Anyone had the pleasure of getting the Y+ seating on this route when booked in Y? I'm flying it in August returning in September and am hoping to get up enough SC's before the trip to get into the 2 rows or so of Y+ that they are selling as Y.. I'm guessing it will only be platinum members? I'm hoping to be gold by the trip... do i stand any chance?

I thought there would be teething problems with this route.
It seemed very ambitious.
I hope they are sorted by August.:p

..Looking at .... 'Great Circle' mapper gives LAX-MEL as 12748 kms, and DFW-BNE as 13363 kms. So, in round figures about 300 nm difference, or about 8 tonnes of fuel (which would mean about 13 tonnes extra at the start of the journey).
So to carry the extra 8 tonnes for 13363 Nm you burn an extra 5 tonnes ?? (burning fuel to carry the fuel needed for longer range)

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't SQ fly longer routes than this (SIN-EWR/SIN-LAX). How does SQ do it when weather conditions change? Is it simply due to using the A340-500?

It does not bode well that a few days into the new route bags are already being offloaded...

Problem with that is that SFO would be a huge detour. If you look at the flight path maps (there's a link on the thread that dealt with the first DFW flights), the aircraft start heading south-west pretty much as soon as they leave DFW.

To detour to the north via SFO (including time on the ground there) would probably mean up to about 5 hours longer for the total duration of the flight to Australia. The aircraft would also then need to leave DFW much earlier, which wouldn't be as convenient for those who might be coming to DFW from the east or the midwest, to get on board the QF flight

And I would say there would certainly be more pax wanting to get off in BNE, as opposed to those wanting to get on in SFO.

QF also needs to fight the perception that it is too Sydney-centric in its international operations ...

You are correct that SQ fly these longer routes. But they fly business class aircraft with only 100 passengers, and thus is a vastly different equation. Even when they flew with economy passengers on these aircraft (as they for the first 2 or so years of these routes), it was premium economy (plus of course business class) and carried significantly less passengers than a typical A340-500.

Also, I would guess, at least for the longer SIN-EWR route, being more or less on the opposite side of the world, there are a wider range of flight paths available that are of similar distance that can be used depending on conditions.

Good points.

I've had this happen before on a akl-bne flight. Heavy headwind and a full head count. Bags were sent on another airline and turned up 60 min late. No big deal

I was able to pre-select a Y+ seat on a B class fare on QF8 last weekend. That was as an AAdvantage Platinum (oneworld Sapphire) member. But that was for the BNE-SYD leg of the QF8 service.

Me too, on the teething problems. I wonder whether any issues with crew rest will come up?

I hope it works out because it is better than flying to LAX.

As as WP, I have four row 36 seats preselected on two upcoming journeys (Booked with the introductory $999 sale). This would be due to my WP, rather than booking class (All in O).

There's actually 4 rows of "Y class PE" seating (36-39) making 28 such seats available.

If your in J you will get a special Marc Newson-designed laxative and a bottle of organic potpourri spray to mask the smell.

Neil Perry will be responsible for the taste of the laxative but the tablet will be designer by Marc Newson. Your will visit a Newson-designed toilet in the lounge, where your #2 will be automatically weighed and you will be awarded one frequent flyer point per gram, with double points if you're platinum plus bonus status credits for any dump exceeding a set weight.

Same here, got allocated row 36 for both sectors, 2 seats, for $999. I'll have plenty of $$ left over to squeeze in 10-15 rounds of golf on our 3 wk journey. Also, booked some cheap "S" class tickets on AA for travel in USA.

I booked Y+ and managed to get in row 30 in skybeds. I'm WP now was SG when I made the booking and was able to choose them then. I would say your chances are good as long as the seats aren't all taken by then.

cheers
