Obviously from PPRUNE.
Can't see how it could be 400, seems too like too many.

Hmm okay, only thing i've heard is from that website! Must be some truth to it then?

Well I hope for the sake of the good folks at QF mainline crewing it's pure BS and I'll have to eat humble pie on behalf on my mate who is very hit and miss

It was “breaking news” on 7 (Sydney) tonight in the first segment. So, for what that’s worth, it’s at least public. I didn’t hear numbers though.

It may just be a thing to get the old staff out too.
The ones who are nearly 100 years old and are ex-ansett FA's!

But if you got rid of all the QF staff that are over 100, you would only have 2 or 3 left...:p

Offering VRs to staff isn't bad in itself. Some people may actually want to accept a VR, some people deserve to leave, and some people really should have been offered one 15 years ago.

VR has not yet been offered

We have been informed that the company is considering it, and that there will be an expression of interest first from crew.

The offer is open only to Qantas Mainline in short haul and long haul divisions

This certainly isn't a bad thing and is not viewed as such by crew. It removes expensive and disengaged employees who are only coming to work, hoping that VR will be offered at some point. The company knows that and that's why it is voluntary - Crew hold out and come to work, and Qantas pays out! Happened a few years ago - will happen again, when the next group of crew are too senior

There is no risk of any crew member loosing their job from forced redundancies

I doubt it will be 400, although anything is possible.

Hmm, seems to be a mite more than 400...

Qantas offers redundancies to cabin crew

Qantas has offered voluntary redundancies to all 7000 of its cabin crew in response to high oil and jet fuel prices as well as the impact of global natural disasters, it says.

"Qantas issued a voluntary redundancy registration of interest pack to all cabin crew members today," a Qantas spokesperson told AAP yesterday.

Chief executive Alan Joyce says Qantas is facing its most serious challenge since the peak of the global financial crisis. "We need to act decisively to respond to rising fuel costs and natural disasters, just like we did during the global financial crisis, to ensure the ongoing sustainability of our business," he told ABC online.

Have to wonder what the terms of the VR are and whether it's simply a means to hire new staff on less generous packages, as has already been happening to some extent and has been flagged by the pilots...

I'm not up to date on hr/ir law but I believe you can't make positions redundant and then hire people back for a least 6 months. Could be wrong tho.

Practices vary between the public and private sector, industries and geographies.

Please be careful with the wise cracks about age.
At 61 I now get surveyed for years 61 -75 and I have the ear of a survey company so we could fix you with 25-100 with a couple of key strokes!
Let me say I prefer experience to appearance for the obvious safety you get in an emergency.
It is sad times when downsizing becomes necessary but it may provide a staff member an opportunity elsewhere.
Let us all hope Qantas can get thru this turbulence mostly unscathed and have staff who want to be there.

Maybe they should consider opening the offer to the executive team - I'm not sure what the EOI might look like for the little ditherer. :p

It is headline news on breakfast TV.

400 seems high. Does this mean capacity is being reduced?

Yes. Qantas offers 7000 redundencies to cabin crew | The Australian

Qantas wants to reduce its planned capacity growth on domestic flights from 14 to eight per cent, and on international routes from ten to seven per cent.

Qantas will also suspend up to four Jetstar services from Australia to Japan, as well as Qantas flights between Perth and Tokyo, and put a smaller capacity aircraft on the Sydney-Tokyo route.

The airline is also cutting three daily New Zealand domestic flights to Christchurch and one Melbourne to Christchurch flight, the ABC reports.

Though technically, if the redundancies are being offered to Qantas Airlines (QAL staff) only, any re-hiring would (most likely) be undertaken by a separate company QCCA (Qantas Cabin Crew Australia) - the company with the significantly less generous conditions.
