All Qantas cabin crew offered redundancies

Qantas has offered voluntary redundancies to all 7000 of its cabin crew in response to high oil and jet fuel prices as well as the impact of global natural disasters, it says.

"Qantas issued a voluntary redundancy registration of interest pack to all cabin crew members today," a Qantas spokesperson told AAP on Thursday.

Chief executive Alan Joyce says Qantas is facing its most serious challenge since the peak of the global financial crisis.

"We need to act decisively to respond to rising fuel costs and natural disasters, just like we did during the global
financial crisis, to ensure the ongoing sustainability of our business," he told ABC online.

I'm waiting for no news to start running with this story on the front page.

Maybe they will show a photo of a B707 to go with the article?

It may just be a thing to get the old staff out too.
The ones who are nearly 100 years old and are ex-ansett FA's!

The old ones are aren't ex-ansett. Nor should simply being old be a criteria for wanting to assist people in leaving the organisation.

Remind me when you get 'old' and I'll suggest to Qantas that they make you redundant.

Though technically, if the redundancies are being offered to Qantas Airlines (QAL staff) only, any re-hiring would (most likely) be undertaken by a separate company QCCA (Qantas Cabin Crew Australia) - the company with the significantly less generous conditions.

Spot on, hence the offer, its a broom sweep to get the old out and bring in the new, how else would you explain the move on the very day QF announce things are going pretty well, if you look at the figures mainline domestic and international is growing and expansion is keeping pace with that growth although Domestic is taking a hit from competition as far as average RSK, whereas JQ and JQ (Asia) have grown too fast and cannot fill seats. Cut back JQ services but reduce QF staff can only mean one thing:

Hmm, seems to be a mite more than 400...
... 7000 ...
...
That's typical newspeak invoked for dramatic effect.

Nowhere near 7000 will receive VR.

  • It may be offered to upto "7000";
  • Some may apply to take the offer up;
  • Maybe 400 will apply, maybe more, maybe less;
  • If too many apply, then not all will receive it.

And even what they have reported is incorrect

7000 crew are not eligible - that's the total crew population - take away those that are not eligible for it and I would say your down to at least 6000 perhaps even less

VR comes up regularly for Qantas crew - it's happened several times during my time at Qantas, even when Qantas was performing better, and it never made the news.

Oh seriously, some people really need a sense of humor on here... Other members seems to have seen the funny side.

Yeah, I was originally reading that article as 7000 people where going to be made redundant... I didn't realise the number was much lower until coming onto AFF...

The OP suggested that 400 mainline staff would be offered VR - now it appears that a much larger pool than that has been offered it (by all accounts, all mainline crew who are so eligible, hence the 7000 figure).

No one was suggesting that 7000 would take VR - even the article states that it would be 'offered' to 'up to' 7000 mainline staff, which seems to be reported across the board. I don't see how that's misleading newsspeak, as compared with most of the sensationalist tripe they usually peddle - if readers choose to see it as 'QF makes 7000 staff redundant' then their comprehension skills may need a brush up.

Will take milehighclub's word that the number of eligible staff may be less, but if that were a significant point of contention, I'm sure Qantas PR / Joyce would have played it down already.

I had to laugh when I got a email from Travelmole this morning with the headline "Qantas to offload cabin crew".
Geez I hope they don't leave them in DFW along with the bags.:mrgreen:
Cheers

I love the bit about Jetstar sending smaller aircraft to Japan, I didnt realise an A320 could fly that far. Bags not going on that bird.

ABC TV news in Adelaide said they were looking for about 350 volunteers out of 7000 staff.

Glad someone mentioned that, I was reading about it in the Oz today. They certainly seem to be doing ok, even that QF international that is "losing" money.

There are currently just over 400 crew who have expressed interest in VR. Expressions of interest close in another 10 days or so.
