Of course, there's the odd aircraft or two to be retired...
Possibly the 717's

My understanding is that the 717s are not that old - I thought that the originals came from the Impulse fleet, thence went to Qantas, thence to Jetstar and then back to Qantas (Link)!

QF has taken a bettering recently from people complaining about an aging fleet. And that is quite understandable with the 743s, some of the 763s and the 734s

Indeed. It is curious that QF would rather put the first tranche of 787s into the Jetstar fleet rather than revamp its premium product. The product demarcations between QF and JQ are becoming increasingly blurred and such fleet decisions seem to expose the status of JQ as the favoured child and willingness of the QF management to allow further dimunition of the QF brand.

I think it has a lot to do with the cost model employed for Jetsar and the planned grown of the airline. That cost model is based on a single aircraft type that has low operating costs (fuel and maintenance), so they need to get to that operating model as quickly as possible.

It may also be driven by the labour cost differences between the airlines. If they start with a new aircraft type with JQ, then they can structure their labour agreements around the JQ model, given them a lower starting point for negotiations for QF labour agreements rather than going the other way around.

Another factor is that the 787-9 aircraft is better suited to QF's long-haul needs while the 787-8 is better suited to JQ's more regional focus. And of course we know that Boeing will deliver the 787-8 first.

I am sure a great deal of thought and planning went into the decision.

There's no doubt about that! I can't help wonder what will happen to the 330-200s, will they keep them in JQi or unload to maintain one aircraft type in the JQ fleet (ie 787s)? When will the domestic 767s get replaced?!

Qantas have stated that flights between PER-MEL and PER-SYD will be operated exclusively by (widebody) 767's and A330's within two years. It would be my assumption that the A330's they refer to are those that Jetstar now have.

Thinking A332's will be used to replace the 743's being used across the Nullabour ...

As for the 717's ... I meant 'retired from Qantas', I'm sure they would be snapped up by another carrier - probably not one based in Oz however.

Once they get enough 787-8s into the JQ fleet the A332s will return to QF domestic ops, likely to be seen regularly in PER. They could also make some trans-Tasman ops.
