I have the ability to gift my P1 platinum partner membership to my partner. His membership expiry date is currently end of April each year. I'm wondering whether - as he is not due to fly for another few months - I hold off on requesting the platinum membership be allocated to him & that Qantas will gift the platinum membership valid until April 2026 not April 2025?

The Platinum membership is based on your P1 qualification not their status renewal. There is no benefit to holding off on this as it won’t give them any longer at Platinum.
They will retain it as long as you are P1 and don’t remove them and nominate someone else.

It may strain credulity around here, but Qantas can sometimes be inconsistent.
My P1 expired last November, but Madame's partner P continues until October this year.
ISTR that hers initially aligned with mine, but shifted to Oct some years ago, though I didn't pay it much heed at the time.

Did Madame earn enough SC's to earn Platinum themselves during their original membership year?

At first I thought an extension, but that's outside of the dates of the last set so that's all I can think of.

Of course my own gifted Plat was mistakenly extended into 2nd half of 2025, but aligned with my year too last year (ie: gt an extra year). I've now requalified P1 anyway so it's back in sync, but was definitely a "bank error in your favour."

so yeah, it's shocking I know, but inconsistency happens ::D

No SCs for either of us since pre-Covid.
Just another QF anomaly I guess.

Adding them will also sync their membership year to yours
That what I was once told but it has not been my experience. I dropped from P1 in Aug 23, my wife's roll over is end Feb and remained WP through to Feb 24. Even better was QF extended her status through to end of Feb 25, which was not expected. She has never earn't any level of status in her own right and out of curiosity I took a look at her account. She joined QF in 2008 and by the time she drops to SG she will have been a WP for about 12 years with a LT status count of exactly 1000 :)

Yeah, that's weird. I was thinking maybe the sux months between anniversaries has something to do with it, but I can't think of a way that makes sense.

A bit like @Happy Trails above, I wonder if it's either a massive bank error, or perhaps a bit of the "charm offensive" in action perhaps.

Certainly a nice bonus which I hope she was able to take advantage of.

It came in handy in Japan earlier this year. When we got to the F lounge the lounge staff were initially not willing to let the 3 of us in (which are the normal rules). I asked my wife to show the staff her card it was sorted out within a minute or 2. The staff let us know that my wife's status was not in the booking, not sure why QF had not passed these over as her QFF no. was in the original booking.

The expiry is supposed to be in sync with your P1 initially, but if your P1 lapses/expires or you remove them as the nominee, they will keep the platinum until their own anniversary month at which point it'll be reassessed on their own earnings.

aha! thanks as always.

That would explain both the situations described by @Happy Trails and @Matt_01 . In the first case, the status extensions lapsed for November 2023, so HT dropped from P1, and his Madame then reverted to her October anniversary date (sweet!), and Matt_01's wife too reverted to her anniversary date.

Consistent! :D

Just to ask another question on this topic:

When the partner/nominee has gifted platinum, their profile states they need 1200 SC to retain platinum before the end of their membership year. They jumped to WP from Silver.

Is this actually the case though, if its “re-assessed” would they not need the full 1400 SC, despite what their profile states?

Also to clarify, if their membership year ends April 2025, but platinum was granted to them January 2024 - do they have until January or April to earn the SC?

Hey all, just rambling through the site. And saw this thread, one of my favorite contemplations re status. And although I acknowledge each persons situation is different, I just laugh at this mis-used perk. Why on earth would you give the P status to your partner??? Maybe I am different, but usually I travel with my plus 1. So she has all the lounge, etc benefits. I have only ever gifted the other status to friends, etc.

I guess they are already WP, so that is the reassessment criteria. There are no classes of WP.

Why is it misused? I guess it goes to the best-directed need. I have used family, friends, business partners, staff, and lovers.

It is a gift for all seasons!

Spruce,

sorry, unsure how to quote you...

When I mean it is misused, it is because when given to a person you travel with, it does not, I beleive, really enhance their flying experience. They already bask in one's own P1 status. Maybe if they travelled alone also?

If they want it renewed in May 2025, they have until April 2025 to requalify, i.e., 1200SC.

They can let it expire and drop to Gold, do their prequalification in May 2025, and hold that until April 2027—but that's for the hardcore enthusiast.

They were Silver before being nominated for/gifted WP - so no soft landing. But flying a ton for a new job so will be in striking distance of WP - hence the question if they need 1400 or 1200 SC.

Profile says they need 1200 to retain, but T&C’s might imply they need the full 1400 if they get reassessed when the P1 benefit drops in January (or at the end of their membership year in April - still confused on that point?)

My critics don't stumble on this point.

So, I think I understand your situation. Your partner is P1, and you fly with them, so there is no perceived benefit in you being granted (anointed) WP status. You would be correct; however, you would earn more points as a WP

Correct - they (you) would benefit from WP benefits if flying alone.

Your main point was that it would be more helpful if they gave WP to someone who really needed it - yep, I totally get that.
