Hi,
I've purchased Star class tix SYD-HNL-SYD. I also plan to go to mainland USA from Hawaii, but there isn't much in the way of good fares, comfortable aircraft, decent airline etc.
Also the JQ flight from Syd to HNL is partially overnight (yuk)..
Now I have found i can redeem 2 tix in PE on QF from BNE to LAX.. the flight is only 13 hrs, plus mostly during day so no deprived sleep dramas... it wastes 72,000 points...but then I get $1000 per person back from refunding one leg of the Star class journey..plus it saves whatever the HNL-SFO oneway so maybe another $250 or so..
I am in two minds.. is PE worth wasting 72,000 points ? Could I better use those points to get in and out of hnl and just stick with my original tickets..

If points aren't a issue I would look at flying to LAX.
However if you want to avoid the Zoo that LAX can be, then J* to HNL and another carrier to the mainland (4hrs or so) could be a viable option.

Hi,

Where in the mainland are you going? There's quite a few options, but the majority require transit of LAX or SFO. But there are other options. "Comfortable aircraft, decent airline" - not many US carriers live up to Australian expectations (despite all our griping about QF/DJ/JQ).

Also the JQ flight from Syd to HNL is partially overnight (yuk)..
As is BNE-LAX

Now I have found i can redeem 2 tix in PE on QF from BNE to LAX.. the flight is only 13 hrs, plus mostly during day so no deprived sleep dramas..

Actually, it's kind-of 50/50 - you leave 11am and arrive 7am - much of the flight is night time. The "day" ends fairly quickly once departed BNE and then it's dark pretty much until descent to LAX.

. it wastes 72,000 points...but then I get $1000 per person back from refunding one leg of the Star class journey..plus it saves whatever the HNL-SFO oneway so maybe another $250 or so..

Only you can judge the "value" of your points (based on what else you might do with them, what else you might do with the $1000-$1250 etc),

Personally, i'd keep the *class flights and find a return HNL-SFO or HNL-LAX or HNL-wherever you're going - looking around for good deals.

When are you going?

Re: QF Premium Economy on Points to LAX, vs Star Class to HNL and domestic to Mainlan

hi, thanks for the advice. We want to go to SFO on the mainland.. i am also angling to get down to Caribbean but that's a long stretch. We need to depart Oz around 26-28 Jul.
I thought the Star Class were a good deal... it was just annoying that to come home I'd need to come via Hawaii again after already having done that on the way over.. but i guess I could at least jump to Mainland from Maui in one instance.
I think I'd rather spend $1250 than waste 72,000 points as that many points can be used for a leg worth a lot more than $1250... think the lax option would only be good if J seats came up and I am pretty sure that is not going to happen.
