Does anyone have any experience with baggage interline on QF (Reward - first PNR, SYD to Jakarta) and subsequently QR (Paid - second PNR, Jakarta to Europe). The QF homepage seems to suggest baggage “maybe” checked through in this scenario:

“^ Exemptions apply for customers travelling on a oneworld separate PNRs when using a combination of award travel and revenue travel. Note: This is a Qantas exemption and may not be supported by all oneworld airlines.”

QF should check through if your first flight is a QF reward ticket.

Coming the other way, QR will check through on seperate PNRs (regardless of reward or revenue). It’s a published feature.

Precovid, despite published rules, QF refused to check me through on a 2 separate PNR itinerary : QFMEL-LAX award and AA LAX- domestic revenue fare. There was 5 hrs at LAX between flights. Both in J/F
At least there you collect bags anyway and would have been able to recheck at the transfer desks. A PITA elsewhere….

Thanks - I am also asking from the perspective of getting a visa (x3) for Indonesia. If we are sure that QF checks through, then we are probably good, hoping we can either check-in for the QR flight online / show up at a transfer desk in Jakarta (if that exists for QR). But maybe it’s just safer to apply for an Indo Visa anyway.

Yep, that would be safer.

Have you transited CGK before? I posted earlier a deal CGK-JFK on QR (sold as AA). Quite compelling fare that I would seriously consider but already booked to go to NYC 1st half of next year already.

My last transit was in 2016 to do Bali - Jakarta - KUL - HKG all in 1 day on AirAsia; that was an experience on it's own (but worked out without any dramas). I don't remember what terminal that was but it was the "old airport".

I see that QF and QR both leave from T3 so I hope that baggage is checked through and that I can somehow get boarding passes for at least CGK to DOH in Sydney so that we just need to wait airside for a few hours without entering Indo. I see that there is a USD 35 VoA (did prices go up?), so if that's still around in July 2023, then I will probably go down that route if I really have to.

I rarely transit thru 2 diff airlines, but last time I did pre-COVID (Feb '20) QF tagged my bags through 2 separate PNRs: QF SYD-HKG F award and JL/CX HKG-NRT Y codeshare rev.

FWIW, when I was in CGK last month, I don't recall seeing the international transfer desks in their usual spot still (right before the sharp turn to Immigration/VoA), currently it's the place where they check your vax certs. Haven't seen them at all since COVID hit.

Can you point me to where it's published on the QR website? I have exactly the scenario in the OP (but with transit through SIN).

Yes, here. I meant to post this link earlier but couldn’t find it then. Took a few goes and managed to find it now!

Under the “Benefits” tab see “Through check-in“:

Qatar Airways is pleased to offer passengers the courtesy of through check-in of themselves and their bags to their final destination when travelling on multi-sector journeys involving connections onto other oneworld member airlines, even when the trip is booked using separate tickets.
However, customers should note that through check-in may not be possible on their return journey if their trip starts with another airline that does not provide the same level of service.

Excellent. Thx very much
Back in May, SYD+1 did QF SYD-SIN (whY revenue) <-> QR SIN-DOH-BER (J revenue). Did an overnight in SIN on the way over to avoid any mis connects but coming home flew straight thru with bags checked all the way from BER to SYD no drama.

I've allowed 24 hours at SIN in both directions for exactly that reason
So you probably won’t need the checked through luggage?

But this will expedite your arrival (SIN e-Gates open for Oz passport holders - no enrolment required):

For departures from SIN, the Jewel early checkin is now accepting QR again (as well as QF) - from noon to 8pm.

QF F lounge opens around 2:30pm (if there’s a QF72 to PER), otherwise a bit later and the QR J lounge opens around 6pm.

But in that scenario QF was right as everyone who has an International arrival in LAX must collect their bags and go through customs even if only transiting to another international flight.
Absolutely no sense QF trying to tag your bags through.

Except it makes the difference between dropping the bag on the conveyor or waiting in line for another tag 😔

I’ve never had a prob getting tagged thru QF reward to AA revenue.

Well in my experience I have never had a bag tagged through LAX even when arriving from South America on AA and transferring to an AA flight. We had more than 50 International arrivals into LAX. Though I had not asked for it. Getting the bag tagged by AA was never a problem and was very quick. AAdvantage though was my primary program.
