Saw this posted on another discussion board, so I looked it up. There's a slide in Malaysia Airports' 4Q results last month about targeting QF to operate SYD-KUL. It's not clear if it's a done deal or not, but BA did announce their return to KUL last week... Interesting nonetheless.

It would be nice for this to happen... but with what aircraft? Qantas are already stretched too thin with their fleet, and the new 787s & A350s aren't coming until FY27 (so 2H26 at the earliest). Maybe A321XLRs? Sounds unpleasant depending on seating config.

For QF / OW pax this would open new connections to Europe if all these eventuate: LHR (BA), HEL (AY) and MAD (IB). Perhaps the best addition to complement the existing or known network is MAD to reach the western side of the Mediterranean.

Can a 220 go that far?
SYD-KUL is 4107mi. Well beyond the usable range of the 220 (around 3500mi for the -300).

The 321XLR though.. could absolutely do it.

EDIT oh I didn't see this comment was from jb. I see what you did there :D

Bamboo would've worked... But once again, QF has zero interest in aircraft for mainline.
Wouldn't want to muddy a Frequent Flyer Bank with the trivialities of an airline.

I'll throw in a left-field Idea. The existing BLR/DEL services will stop in KUL., perhaps even terminate there if they're not going well commercially.

Slides seem quite specific about targetting oneWorld airlines.
KUL might have some amount of demand, but it is low yield. QF pulled out of KUL for a reason. If they were to resume mainline service to KUL, they'd have to cut service elsewhere as they don't have the aircraft otherwise.
They currently service KUL with codeshares on 3K via SIN.

I mean its possible if the Malaysian government wants to subsidise it and help interconnectivity with MH as well given it's a OW hub airport with a OW homebase airline instead of SIN.

Maybe QF would do this not daily and remove QF81 from the schedule and some QF41? That would in theory work if they align CGK to daily between syd/mel and not overlap QF41 and QF39.

I guess it comes down to how big an incentive they are willing to throw at QF...

It does seem odd.. not to mention the seemingly fractured relationship between MH and QF ever since the "Red" thing.

However, MH is state owned so.....
