QF/SAA codeshares to go - PER to lose again?

Perth has a HUGE quantity of South Africans living here. And they can be summed up in 2 ways....

1: They are not notorious for paying more money when there are cheaper alternatives!

2: They are more loyal to SAA than to Qantas.

So while a SYD-PER-JNB flight might suit a handful of folks who want to pay more money to travel a longer routing and transit a pain in the cough Sydney airport, it would rule out the vast majority who would pay less to travel direct on SAA for less!

Let's face it, how often is Qantas the cheaper alternative.

While SAA is might be a cheaper product, it is also inferior (in Y, not sampled SAA J). So you do get what you pay for.

From what I can gather from the article in The Australian the QF 63/64 route SYD > JNB is safe for now at least.

When I was on the flight (QF 63) earlier this year I was surprised at the number of fellow passengers originating their journey from New Zealand.

Qantas must get quite a bit of feed from other ports on this route it appears.
 
It was probably better tbh no pjs though. Was glad we got the opup

I don't think I would rate it better than QF, but it was pretty reasonable. Wine isn't as good. No PJs, which I expected, but I took my own QF F set ;).

I wold not assume its safe, QF had said themselves on submissions in regard the JSA that its not sustainable without the codeshare.

What a laugh.

Wasn't their whole argument behind moving their transit from Singapore to Dubai that it meant less connecting and was more direct? You can't have it both ways, QF.
 
... and other times closer to the pole:

We flew over the pole / sea ice on QF63 a couple of years ago, was a great sunny day and the sun's reflection off the ice was incredible. Took some great pics too. That was in September (which from memory is the time of the year when the tradewinds from the west (roaring 40's) are stronger). I imagine lighter winds may mean a less southerly route, stopping in PER regardless of wind conditions may not interest Qantas.

Interesting regarding the codeshares, if status isn't a priority the SAA codeshares on QF63/64 are a good deal. I noticed many with SAA boarding passes for those flights when we flew.
 
There have been a number of threads with respect to fuel consumption on (ultra)long haul flights. A flight to JNB from PER rather than SYD would have to carry a lot less (excess) fuel. Perhaps making the flight more profitable.

And if ticketed SYD-JNB on a single flight number you wouldn't earn the extra miles anyway.

I still find it interesting that QF offers only fully flex one way tickets for the PER-JNB route (abt $2100+)
Ex JNB both Saver (R7660) and Flex (R9800) fares are offered. (1AUD approx 9.5 ZAR)

While I might fly QF from JNB I think I'll find a different method of getting there.

We have flown family out from JNB to PER and it is cheap as chips.

So much so even suggested the other day (god help me) that we should bring out my fiancé's MOTHER for a holiday because it's so cheap.

What was I thinking, hurry up QF/SAA, cancel that route...
 
Maybe I missed it, but did they have a date for this potential cancellation of the codeshare? Because I have just arranged flights for May, and I got on the QF codeshare without an issue.
