Hi all, grateful for your advice again!

I booked the following same-day QF flights:
PNR 1: MEL-SYD (6.30am departure)
PNR 2: SYD-MEL (5pm) + MEL-LAX (9.40pm)

1. Will I be able to check my bags through to LAX: 1) in Melbourne before my MEL-SYD flight; or 2) in Sydney at 8am-ish after I land? (Not keen to lug them around the city for the day.) If neither, is the next best option to use the luggage storage service in Sydney dom?

2. Does the T-80 rule apply to international flights, and if yes, would T for MEL-LAX here be 9.40pm, or 5pm (first leg of PNR)?

3. I can't seem to allocate seats for my internal Y US AA flights (for mid-late June) on both QF or AA websites. Is this common?

So much to learn from the gurus here... thanks in advance!!

If QF won't check through in MEL due to different PNRs, you should be able to check them when you get to SYD. SYD has all day check in.
Reading again, I notice you're going back to MEL for QF95. First read it as MEL-SYD, then a 2nd PNR for QF11. In this case, as a through check would result in a MEL-SYD-MEL-LAX tag, the computer will refuse to check it, even on the same PNR.

I can't seem to allocate seats for my internal Y US AA flights (for mid-late June) on both QF or AA websites. Is this common?
QF and AA use different computer systems. As such, they have different PNRs for the same booking.
If codeshares are involved, there can be another PNR.
During a trip last year, I had a number of QF and AA flights on the same ticket. Some of the AA flights were on QF codeshares.
All the QF codes came under the same QF PNR and the AA coded flights had another PNR. However, the QF codeshare flights had another, different AA PNR and I needed to use this 2nd AA PNR in order for the seat selections, etc to work (even though all the flights appeared on the AA site under the 1st AA PNR).

Wow thanks Himeno! Yes, on second read, my itinerary has two different AA PNRs, one dom and one intl, both showing all flights but with seat selection restricted to respective dom/intl only... how odd. Thanks anyhow! Managed to allocate Main Cabin seats on AA; glad QF's T-80 rule doesn't apply to AA.

One option would be to see if you can checkin for QF95 super early in MEL Intl terminal then just fly MEL/SYD/MEL with hand luggage. Not sure if QF MEL do an all day checkin for international flights like QF SYD do.

QF won't be able to check bags MEL/xSYD/MEL/LAX as no city can appear twice on the bag tags. While you could check bags MEL/SYD then collect them in SYD and put them in storage all day until you come back from the city.

While QF can check bags SYD/xMEL/LAX, I don't think they can checkin more than 6 hours away so if you're on a 1700 SYD/MEL flight that would mean 1100 would be the earliest you could check them in again.

If QF won't check through in MEL due to different PNRs, you should be able to check them when you get to SYD. SYD has all day check in.

I think the all day checkin thing is a SYD international terminal T1, not domestic T3 where pax would be.

Ahhh ok thanks ozbeachbabe! I'll check out the storage options in Syd dom. (I won't attempt the super early check-in in MEL intl because of the stupid o'clock flight.)

Only other ootion would be to leave them in storage in MEL. Saves you waiting for them in SYD.

Ah, so for the SYD-MEL-LAX leg, I'd be able to check-in/print boarding passes at Syd dom, but check my bags in at Mel intl? That'd be preferable to my 2nd option.

You could even do OLCI the day prior so not even have to see staff at SYD T3 - after you arrive back in MEL get your bags out of storage and checkin for the MEL/LAX flight.

Probably no big deal if you haven't already checked in assuming you've already selected your seat in advance.

D'oh of course! Thanks this will save me a lot of hassle. I've selected my seat and will check again T-80 (like a pro)!
