QF Status points on Codeshare with EK?

Sorry if this is a dumb newbie question..... But I have spent hours on the QF website and chats with their agents and still can't get a clear answer. Have tried calling but they are always experiencing 'long delays'.

Hopefully someone here knows the answer!

Next year (April) I need to fly Sydney to Paris. I'd prefer to just fly 2 sectors via Dubai, rather than 3 sectors via London.

So here is where I get confused. And my concern here is gaining the maximum QF status points.

When viewing potential flights on the QF website there seem to be 2 main options.

1. QF metal to Dubai, then EK metal (with a QF flight number) to Paris.
2. QF metal to Dubai, then EK metal to Paris, with EK flight number.

My confusion stems from seeing a page on the QF website that stated no QF points are earned on EK via Dubai. And can't find that darned page now. But it may have related to EK flight numbers not codeshares?

So the question. Am I right in assuming .......

Option 1 above will earn QF status points Dubai to Paris, but
Option 2 won't?

And....

If I want to upgrade economy to Business using QF points, can I do that on either of these options?

Sorry if it's a dumb question.

Correct - only option 1 earns you status credits with Qantas on the DXB-CDG leg - and with neither option can you use QF points to upgrade on EK metal.

Bummer. That's what I thought. Kind of makes codeshare flights unattractive.....

But this is wierd......

Last year I flew Bangkok to Sydney on an EK flight (QF Ticket) and upgraded to 1st Class!
So does it depend on the sector being flown?

then you shouln't be on EK flights at all. They are not part of OneWorld alliance and give you no status credits.
I would rather book with Qatar and get more miles + SC.

Rather inaccurate and not in the Qantas spirit!

QF would rather you use their codeshare on EK - that's why they put the Codeshare on the flights. I flew around a dozen return MEL-DXB-CDG earlier this year, the majority on the EK codeshare; vast majority in Y - some observations:

1. Quite often they were the cheaper of all the QF-earning flights
2. Earn with QR is negligible - in fact, in QF's earn table it probably comes second-last only to MH
3. QR treat OW elites flying Y with disdain (have a look at the Lounges provided)
4. EK treat QF SG significantly better than QF treat their own Golds
5. EK's handling of IRROPS is generally excellent
6. On no occasions were the QF codeshares more expensive than the EK equivalent (when the same fare bucket was available) ... I realise this may be peculiar to this route, but relevant to the OP.

No. There's no mechanism for requesting an upgrade on non-QF metal (unless I'm having a "brain block" this morning!). Can you remember how you applied for the Upgrade?

I would have booked it on the QF website directly.
Maybe it was originally QF metal and got changed to EK?

But it was definitely a QF booking made online and definitely ended up in EK 1st Class (with the showers)

Hence my confusion over codeshare upgrades.........because I've had them in the past...........

I'll see if I can find more details about that booking.

Afternote. It gets more interesting. I found the original booking confirmation. Both sectors Syd-BKK-Syd were EK flight numbers...... (although booked via Qantas). It was Dec 2016.

Strangely on the e-ticket it does not show the class/status of Travel. Maybe it was just a lucky 'glitch'?

Correct that you cannot request an upgrade. However we have been free upgraded once in Qantas with literally hundreds of flights and on Emirates, I think six times on 8 flights. Do the maths.

That upgrade referenced above was probably a freebie.

My niece was offered a points upgrade via Emirates a few weeks ago. But it wasn’t offered online. Just an email.

of course they do offer SC if booked via QF codeshare. But it's almost double price im my experience compare own EK bookings
On my last trip to Moscow I got 400 SC with Qatar for 4 segments in J, in EK it would be zero.

From April QF will not fly it's own metal to DXB any more (Well March 25 to be exact with the seasonal schedule change) so if you MUST go through DXB (ie you want that 2 leg trip, which makes sense) and you want QFF SC then yes, you MUST book as QF8xx_ codeshare flight numbers to earn. Any other combination is a no go.

Agree, the upgrade would have been an op up that you wouldn't have known about till check in, r even possibly at the gate. I mean you "ended up" in First.. it's not like you put in an upgrade request (because it's not an option) and had it confirmed. A nice way to enjoy a flight like that for sure. Guess J was extra full that day.

Note that one should not expect these much these days since EK changed how they allocate op ups from status to fare paid, so unless one pays full J or something the chances are fare less than they used to be.

I’ve often checked and have found the price differential isn’t that great on my flights.

Remember in some markets EK and QF may each have different fare offerings, but mostly that I see they are aligned pretty well. Yes QF has a surcharge for the codeshare of $60 or so (IIRC) which seems standard but that aside one reason QF coded fares could show higher could be related to the number of seats they've bought from EK to offer under their code. It may only be a few, hence limited availability, or it could be a specific revenue management decision.

On routes I've looked at over the years (trans tas, LHR, SIN etc) the prices have pretty much been in line that I have seen as are the fare offerings (eg: EK sale == QF sale)
