Hmm, put up fares or slug award tickets as well.....

Qantas will apply a “Q Surcharge” for travel on Qantas flight QF7 Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth, where current demand for travel is high.

Effective for sale and travel on/after 11 April 2014, one surcharge will be applied per outbound sector for tickets issued in all Qantas points of sale for travel on QF7 to Dallas/Fort Worth.

Cabin Amount
Economy AUD50
Premium Economy AUD100
Business AUD200
The Q Surcharge will also be applied to one-way fares.

Customers booked and ticketed before 11 April 2014, for travel on QF7, will not incur the Q Surcharge.

Stupid question. Why? Surcharge due to high demand? That's a new one.

Really odd.

Why not change the price instead of an extra line item? Drip pricing in action or another way to avoid OTA fees or just toying with regulators?

How long before they are through the alphabet with surcharges?

The X Surcharge (we couldn't think what to name it! )

Well, that sucks, it's going to affect the loads to DFW and become a self fulfilling prophecy when it gets canned due to lack of patronage.

If the flights r so full why would they give away award tix ?

There aren't many on that route. The surcharge memo is from QF corp to TA's and I doubt that many (if any) pax would be aware of any increase in fares on the route secondary to a surcharge.

I wonder if the surcharge is commissionable

In that case is getting a bit weird ... Maybe it's to reduce "abuse" by pesky xONEx travelers.

Watch this space. Qantas will probably announce A380 operating the triangular route in near future. Better fuel economy, more pax load and increased revenue. Combined also with the Brisbane International lounge redevelopment.

Why not just lift the base fare?

Probably because the base fare is also applicable on routing via LAX, and also to pick up revenue when included in an xONEx or other round the world products. Other airlines do this as well, on particular routes or surcharges on particular days of the week. On SQ I have certainly read about surcharges on certain days of the week on certain routes, and in J/F on their newer products, (but only on commercial fares, never seen a surcharge on award bookings like this). It will be interesting to see if the surcharge applies to award bookings or not.

Which Brisbane International lounge development?
