Qf syd dom - int 1:05 tfer

I have made it from plane door to the EK lounge at SYD in 20 minutes once, but the bus arrived about a minute after I reached gate 15.

I experienced this only last week. I was on the 6am from Adelaide to Syd for the QF23 to Bangkok at 9.50. I was wondering at the time I booked how short the connection time was - would have much rather been a later flight. Lucky there was no fog etc in the morning but when got to Syd - I had never seen such a long queue to the bus! Then started stressing, but then they called those on my flight to come forward. Just missed that bus, on next ok but then it waited at least 10 mins or more for other buses I guess before we could even get off. Then of course the immigration queues. After much stressing I did make the gate, although I think it ended up being delayed anyway so that did help a bit.

But the other thing which is annoying (coming from Adelaide), last year I went to Hawaii and the return flight does not arrive in time to catch a connecting flight - so have the extra expense and inconvenience of paying for a night in Sydney. I dont see why it could not leave an hour or 2 earlier in day.

I recently had a 70 min transfer window from MEL to SYD to catch a flight to BKK. When I rang the 131313 number after an enormous wait, I was told the time was sufficient and if I wanted to change it, cough up $400. The ground staff in MEL were really good and put me on an earlier flight which made the transfer a breeze. It probably helped that I was in business. Ground staff great; 131313 people bloody awful.

I've had the 'pleasure' of a 50 min window to get across for NZ flights, which I've made, but I had carry on luggage. One of my team who had a 1.30 window and made it in person, but not her luggage on the transfer from the MEL flight to the LHR flight (going with BA). So, sometimes it's best to ask when booking. I now stop our corporate travel agents booking a connection of less than 2 hours, to be sure

ADL has the blasted curfew, so no planes can take off before 6am, that CX plane from HKG that comes in about 5.45am is the exception.
If any airline does come into ADL after 11pm or take off before 6am, the airline faces charges.
So, 6am is the only earliest take off time possible for flights from ADL.
And also, no current good walkable hotels at ADL airport, the only is the budget one on Don Bradman Dr.
Can't wait till that 4 star class hotel opens up next to the terminal.
Only option is to get the last flight with QF/VA and overnight in MEL/SYD/BNE/PER prior to your flight out of Au overseas.

Hi All

I just did the domestic to international transfer in Sydney again last night on my way to Tokyo.

This time I had someone book it for me online and they selected a connection that had only 1:05hrs between flights.

Apparently the other option available was 2:05hrs (what I would have booked). Now my fault I didn't check the details until I was on my way to the airport.

All fine thanks to lovely check in angel who put me on the earlier flight - thanks QF 

However she did say that normally with a sale fair that they won't let you change flights like that which got me thinking.

The earlier flight landed 17mins ahead of schedule and transfer took approx 50mins gate to gate. If I took the original flight and the arrived on schedule into SYD, could I have missed the connection?

Maybe QF would hold the plane for me on my $1k fare, maybe they would not.

My question is - Do you think it is fair/reasonable/good customer experience on the general public for QF to sell such a tight connection of 1:05hrs?

I am not asking you all as experts who do it all the time and know what's involved, but pretend that it's your relative who's a rookie on their own.

Thoughts?

never been happy with the transfer times offered have been late many times just making it to the international flight connection with barely minimum of time left. ( always stressfull) I make sure I now leave at least 3 hours ........flagship Sydney lounges and AMEX lounge need to be used.

Just "maybe" there is a reason why QF insists an hour and 10 mins is enough to transfer from an Au dom to an Au int flight in SYD is enough.
Worst is that if you have paid for a whJ class and can't use the SYD J or (F (if you are WP/P1)) lounges.
Less people who are eligible to use the SYD lounges, but don't use it because they don't have enough time, means more $ for QF, you pay for it, but can't use it, (visitation rights to the SYD QFi lounges that is).
I know RichMEL disagrees, but I do nowadays do an overnight in SYD if I want to get anywhere internationally with QF.

It's only enough if all goes smoothly otherwise you could end up staying an extra night. I've seen way too many delays of 15m-30m on the evening BNE-SYD flights and people rushing to make international connection.

Personally I don't need that stress. Quite happy to leave 3 hours.

you and me both Poochie :). Rydges in Sydney has had a lot of nights from us. We always stay overnight if the international flight is prior to 2pm. Canberra is far too vulnerable to fogs and cancelled planes by Qantas and I don't like stress. We have plenty of time so an extra night here or there doesn't worry us. We generally allow 3 hours for transfers in Sydney and I have lost track of the number of times I have been on the transfer bus with passengers suffering major stress because they thought they were going to miss their connection. Just not worth it.

From international to domestic the min connect time is 75 minutes.

I was told by a QF phone rep that it's 90 minutes and that the system won't let them ticket anything less. Suspect it was just a lie to get me off the phone though.

Actually, they may have been correct after all. These are the international>domestic connection times for QF at SYD according to Expert Flyer. Towards the bottom it seems to show a MCT of 90 minutes for QF>QF transfers form T1 to T3.

MCT QF - QF Dom to Int at SYD can be as low as a ridiculous 1 hour.

MCT Int to Dom at SYD can be as low as an 1 hour 15 minutes.

But not when QF is the domestic carrier.

For that it's 1 hour 30 minutes and can be more depending in the connection.

I have lost count of the number of times I have not made the domestic connection after an international flight. I hate not knowing which flight will be available. I also hate losing my pre-allocated row 4 seat.

This made me think.... can't say ever missed an Int flight out of Australia.

Definitely ran late many times coming in and connecting on at DOM

PS. favourite connection was back in the day with QF81 still running. New York - LA - Syd PE and then the internal IMT security review. f lounge and an upgrade to J on the last leg.... (lots of Uni students on-board that day heading to Adel fro Uni Games)

I don't really care about International to Domestic connections as the next flight for me is only to MEL so not an issue.

The other way however I would not normally even consider 90 min as adequate. In March we had a 160 min planned connection. We were offered and took an earlier flight to SYD which should have given us a 190 min connection. After a series of issues/cancellations etc we barely scurried straight onto out International aircraft. Our guest who has never been into an airport lounge was not impressed.

I am constantly amazed at some of the connections people book. One run around the holding pattern is worth about 7-8 minutes. ATC's favourite phrase is "reduce to minimum speed".

We do not wait. If there is no luggage in the hold we'll go immediately.

When I was commuting, I never used less than 3 hours. If I couldn't get that, I went the day before. Not quite the same scenario, I know, but it's too easy to lose time, and impossible to get any back.

We've got a 2h and 15m transfer coming up next week.... already on the 6am flight out of BNE. If the next flight leaving Syd was an afternoon flight I would ensure we had plenty of F lounging time. Breakfast = pfft

The one I might be posting about is a 35min transfer we got later this year BJX-MEX-VSA (MCT is 35min) .... fingers crossed it's the same plane!

I once had ~50m connection SYD-ICN-MNL on OZ. It met MCT but I didn't think enough but from memory that was the only to get the cheaper award via BMI. As it turned out as soon as I had deplaned from the SYD-ICN flight (which was late) someone was waiting for me and we ran through the terminal, through security and to the other flight and shut doors behind me. I hate these short connections.

Had they not waited for me then I would have missed a whole lot of flights lined up from MNL.
