Not wise going into political discussions on a FF forum but they will need to make a decision on which is worse soon. Do you continue to allow countries like Iran and Venezuela to flourish with increased revenue from rising oil prices? There are known links between the 2 governments(?) and both fund terrorism....
Now, which state in the USA gains most from high oil prices? Think of a 5 letter name that starts with T. And from which state with a 5 letter name starting with T was the current US president previously Governor, and no doubt maintains significant business ties and gains significant electoral funding?

There is no one single factor in play, its a combination of many different factors. But one thing is for certain, we ain't going to see US$40/barrel ever again.

My first post aqnd it is about petro-politics.
The tar oil sands of Alberta do have a large reserve but as Anon said it is costly and energy intensive. If oil came down in price then the profitability of this will disappear. The same goes for off shore oil, it is very expensive to extract the oil, the deeper the water the costlier it is. With the current oil price a large number of fields now become economically viable to exploit. No one knows for certain how much oil there is, indeed the definition of exploitable does not exist. With the high price of oil alternative energy sources, energy efficient technology, now become viable but it will take some time and money to bring them on-line.
Now regarding oil money and funding of all sorts of global terrorists....well I will leave that for a differnet forum ;)
Fuel surcharge and inclusion in the ticket price it matters to some people that they are left out of the ticket price. Industry flyers do not get the discount on it, award travel has to pay it, travellers using the internet may not pay it
I know for myself a 90% self funded traveller, well I have reduced the amount I travel due to the increasing costs that I had to take some Jetstar flights to get the SCs cheaply to even maintain Gold.

Has anyone noticed any increase in international airfares post 31 August 2006?

A one-way airfare SYD-AKL-CHC for travel in Jan 2007 is still the same price as it was over a month ago! Return airfares SIN-SYD for travel in 2007 have not changed either.

I suspect that there has been an increase to fuel surcharges as promised but the base airfare has come down to compensate.

Has anyone purchased international airfares pre 31 August 2006 and compared the airfare today? Would be interested to see the changes, if any, to fuel surcharges and base airfare.

As luck would have it (bad luck, that is), my TA quoted me a fare (D class, SYD-SIN/return, QF5/6, early Dec) on Wednesday 30th August, and I confirmed it on Monday 4th September:

Wed 30/08:
Fare is $3,899 plus taxes/fuel of $318.88, total $4,217.88.

Monday 04/09:
Fare is $3,899 plus taxes/fuel of $342.68, total $4,241.68.

Difference of $23.80 so no big deal really.

There is a trans-tasman sale on currently. A common tactic when fuel surcharges are being increased.

This is typical 'behavior' of International fares where there is competition. ... Not so for domestic. :(

In Jul '04 I purchased a Sale MEL-SYD-MEL ticket for November '04 using the QF web site for ~$115 total; the most recent sale fare would have cost $218 for the same routing. In the same period (Jul '04) a Qantas Sale MEL-HKG-MEL ticket cost ~$1100, today $1073.

Interesting that the fuel surcharge to Asia was due to increase from $98 to $115. For your return flight that should have been a $34 increase. Has your travel agent miscalculated the taxes?

Hmmm... I don't know, John. I have yet to pay so do not have a tax invoice to check. The date for this trip has been moved a few times already between Oct and Dec, so while I have the flights confirmed, I'm not game to pay for a few weeks until the big boss finally confirms he will be there. :D
