QF to significantly increase capacity - are we in for a flood of cheap seats?

The A380 config alone is why it'll never be used on routinely scheduled on short haul (lie flat sleep J seats at 80in pitch when you can get away with 38" 2-3-2 on A330s.... (ok, they're now 2-2-2). Even BNE-PER or SYD-PER (longest feasible domestic flights I can think of) there's not the volume nor the ability to charge a premium in the current config. So you'd need a dense config which further ups capacity (which isnt required anyway).

330/787 seems to be the golden triangle sweet spot for higher demand times.

No different to the 744 domestic operations or the 743 and 74SP operations on domestic that have preceded them, while they are not ideal or optimized for uh operation, QF have a history of using such aircraft regardless in such a way.

The issue we'd have in Australia of using the A380 is turnaround times. By the time all the suits swan about stowing their compendiums in the overheads and do their zoolander-ish twirl "taking off my suit jacket"...

Hilarious. But so true!

Hilarious. But so true!

Its a pet hate of mine. These supposedly intelligent business men, stashing a leather compendium into the overhead space, and then not making room for anyone else who needs it. And of course the the "Suit Dance"..watch me pirouette and twirl as I so gracefully take off my suit coat. I'm ever so important, and this coat needs to be delicately folded to sit on my fancy notepad.

Never mind the 30odd rows of passengers waiting for you...

What domestic gates are set up for A380 operations ?

Only way a A380 will be going to Perth from MEL/SYD is if it's on its way to JNB.

The issue would be boarding direct to UD which I don’t think is available, but whatever gates 747’s have used in the past I guess. You probably wouldn’t let anyone into F, the majority would be downstairs anyway, with perhaps every WP bumped to J :p

I see it would still be an issue getting on and off from the UD.

As for Virgin increasing capacity, well I haven't read anything that states that, but their flights are very full in Economy! People are leaving Qantas for Virgin and Qantas simply adding capacity will not bring them back to Qantas.

They have a scheduled A330 service syd-mel from May (I believe) its only one flight per day. Perhaps testing the waters or just positioning the
aircraft? But its on the website.

DJ will soon run an A330 syd-mel, lets see if it manages to fill the seats.

DJ have been running an A330 SYD MEL since they first introduced them, they are just upping the frequency.

Virgin have been doing it for a while, with 1 to 2 new 738s as well as the odd ATR being added each month versus the occasional fleet retirement, not to mention my least favorite aircraft , the F100s. How do you think they have managed to exceed QF mainline pax numbers for over a year now each month when the figures are released.

Oooh love the idea of putting the A380 on PER legs - perhaps then we could put all the FIFO onto one deck, accompanied by a bouncer or two and an AFP officer? The rest of us could get some peace on the other deck...

And what have the loads on those flights been like?

No idea, however the announcement of the SYD terminal expansion to accommodate A330 bays x4 would
suggest this is just a start!

I wonder though, which routes exactly are there currently capacity limitations? I can't think of too many off the top of my head.

Well DJ have added another flight per day onto SYD-ADL. Taken it once and it was pretty full, I've booked onto it later in May and June. Will see then.

Competition, love it.
