They have been crunching the numbers over at PPrune and some interesting data comes out, essentially a 77L will allow same pax numbers as a 744ER, carry lots more freight and burn 105 - 115T of fuel versus 170T, so if other variable costs were the same (big assumption but will suffice at this point) thats $60000 in fuel savings alone.

Times 365 days = $21.9m

Don't you mean the school kids over there ?

Cannot say any school kids I know post, a few pilots I know do including EK triplers and a CX A330 captain I went to school with.

Got to say I was not happy to see AJ let pilots take leave to fly with EK, now its starting to make a lot more sense in terms of the bigger picture, and as previously mentioned he dropped the 777 lines without prompting at the AGM, or they could just be another RedQ (nee herring)

It's all part of the bigger picture is something we got a lot of on Perth tv.

I am sick of that catch phrase!

Is 60k saving per flight or round trip? If it's round trip wouldn't the savings then be about $43.8m?

60K per DFW-BNE, it wont be double as the fuel burn in the other direction wont be comparable.

Add in that there is two more sectors (BNE-SYD and SYD-DFW) with two takeoffs and the savings would possibly end up being close to double.

The part its missing is cost of leasing a newish 77L versus an owned and fully depreciated 747.

Also of note - the 747-4 carries MORE passengers than a 77L in any similar configuration, and I don't believe the freight difference is substantial.
Just remember Boeing has been able to sell 747-8s to a number of airlines including LH, if the 77L was that much better there would be no sales.

In the context of the route under discussion, those points are mute, specifically both have the same effective capacity for passengers and the 77L can carry more freight on a single flight than the 744s are doing for the whole month, there is also the diversion costs to factor in.

A new 77L can be had for $1 M a month if you can find one, while QF 744s operate with leased power plants that also need to be factored into the equation.
