Always thought roaming charges were for calling and receiving while overseas.
Optus is like this.

I don't think I have ever been charged for receiving texts o/s, just sending them.
I usually disable all roaming on the phone when overseas, so it will be pain if they insist on 2FA.
Unfortunately for me, as soon as you enable roaming, an $X/day charge commences for the pleasure of accessing an overseas network.
I also have a habit of losing my Australian sim when travelling, after swapping to a local sim. So that won't help.
Best practice 2FA allows for multiple options for the user to select - Google Auth or similar, email, sms.

Which Telco does that? Telstra, for all its faults, only charges you the flat fee if you use the service within a 24 hr period.

Only if you use data or make/receive calls the $x amount per day will start. To connect to the phone network there is no charge. Also no charge to receive SMS unless you are on some ancient plan.

Interesting. A Telstra chat rep advised that just connecting the phone to the network would incur the charge. Do you have experience of turning on - data roaming off - not costing?
 
If you are overseas, turn OFF your data access but leave the normal telco access enabled. Telstra only "hits you" if you send an SMS or make an outgoing call.

Most modern phones can also just be set to allow roaming, but have data roaming off. Ie, you don't need to manually disable the data service.

It may be plan specific of course, but I'm on a business plan and, as the others have said, the $10/day charges only kick in if you access the foreign telco network - 3G/4G data, call or SMS - during a 24 hour period AEST (a bit tricky to keep track off while overseas). Have done it for quite a long time - I have days when I have to incur the charge, other days where I don't.

Note you don't have to turn all data off, just 'mobile data' and then not use the call/sms functions.

I don't want others not to be able to call me on my regular number *if they need to!*, so have never used a foreign SIM, so I keep my regular SIM in there, and try to only use wi-fi, but suck up some extra costs for a few days here and there.
 
As only Telstra and Vodafone have been listed up thread, i can state that Optus is the same.

When I travel i keep my Aussie sim in my phone, turn of mobile data (it is a simple click on any android device) and let my phone connect to the roaming network. I don't make or answer any calls, or send any sms, but I can receive sms from my bank or Qantas or anyone at zero charge.

Just make sure you turn the mobile data roaming off before you connect to the local network.

I then put a local sim in my tablet to have data while out and about, and can tether my mobile to it (make it work as a hot spot) if I need to by using wifi on my phone.

That way if there is an emergency of 2fa needed i can be contacted, and if I need to reply via app or email I can use wifi once back at my hotel/airbnb or tether to my tablet.
 
Thanks all. That makes sense, good to hear. In that case, circling back to thread topic, 2fa is not as much of a bother (unless I do choose to go for a local sim).

If you do this and don;t make any phone call or send any texts none of telstra, Optus or Vodaphone will charge. You can still receive texts at no charge.
 
We are on an Optus plan that now includes international calls for an extra $10 a month and 4gb data. It’s a new plan.

It would be nice if QF offered a more readily accessible two-factor option that didn't require a mobile that may not work overseas and also didn't require remembering when you joined the program.
The 2FA is a real pain if you are overseas, using a different mobile number.
I haven't got a clue when I joined, it was last century! The alternative then is to ring the '13' number. What a clunky system! I am currently overseas trying to check my return flight but Qantas has made it very difficult.
