I often book LAX-SYD-LAX using AA. I have noticed that all across the board the minimum AA fare is $1900 (QF special LAX-SYD-LAX is $1290) . When the QF USA sale to AUS ends on July 27, is it likely that the AA fares with return to their usual $1200.

In other words, is this an effort by AA not to interfere with Qantas at the moment, and is this common amongst OW alliances?

Airlines that codeshare are typically allocated a number of seat on the partner to sell and market as they see fit. Just because QF is having a sale, does not mean AA have to follow suit. This is perfectly normal in the industry (and why you can often find bargains on one and not the other).

What one fare does is no link to the others at all.

Booking with Expedia will not help (And if you book on a Euro site you'll pay in Euros, have to pay a bad forex rate and typically 2-5% for your credit card as well).

Despite the poor forex rate and conversion I could find QF flights from SYD/MEL-LAX for about $1000 in November on Expedia.ie compared to $1500 on the QF site.

yes, what whatmeworry said. The point of booking on that site is not about the exchange rates, but about how much charged in total. Have a look. You may be pleasantly surprised. The benefit is mainly on Y, but similar absolute different in PE and J (therefore much lower % difference). In my experience, it may feel dodgy initially, but it posts on "my bookings" pretty much straightaway which helps with the dodgy feeling. :)
