QF vs CX

Re: qf vs cx

A suggestion. Accrue to QF as it seems better for status and possibly lifetime SCs, but get yourself a plat charge and apply for the Marco Polo Gold. This will last a year and at that point you should have OWS or even OWE in QF if you play your cards, and points, right.

I concur with the TPE option. If you can do it in J every couple of trips then you'll have a much more pleasant time commuting and accumulate points and SCs faster (due to status and cabin bonii).

Re: qf vs cx

Thanks all for your replies, I am leaning toward flying mostly CX with an occasional QF thrown in, principally because of the choice of 4 (soon to be 5?) flights each day. vs. 1-2 with QF with similar pricing.

I thought perhaps I should join marco polo, but if booking a low class fare, nominate my QFF number to at least accrue some value?

I am not sure about your suggestions re: TPE fares, do I have to go to TPE, or can I hop off at HKG during transit? This is new to me.

I believe that I can ask for Silver CX when I have it QF in a few weeks time?

Not sure what FASA/JASA is, but do have plat QF card and plat amex already pulling points.

Thanks all for your advice....

Re: qf vs cx

Another often overlooked ffp is Airline Partners - Mileage Plan
No status credits, but can collect miles depending on fare bucket. Some fare low bucket on QF do accrue AS miles but do not on AA ffp.

Do a simple search on this site regarding CX out of TPE, not utilising TPE in your circumstances would be one heck of a waste.
Also search for the abbreviations thread on here too JASA and FASA are mind blowingly awesome when used efficiently.

You also really need to learn the different classes of fares/buckets on your route, because I can almost guarantee that you will get stung with a no earner at some point.

Re: qf vs cx

Not sure what FASA/JASA is...
FASA is a first class Any-Seat-Award and JASA is a business class Any-Seat-Award. These fares earn full points and status credits and can be much better value than a classic award fare. You can use points-plus-pay to reduce the amount of points used.

Re: qf vs cx

i wouldnt bother with ex-TPE trips if you are going with CX mostly and therefore joining Marco Polo club as their qualification is mileage/sector based vs QFF which is zone/status credit based (ie easier to get status with premium class fares on QFF).

also not much point crediting CX discount economy fares to QFF has in most cases you would get only 50% or 0 mileage. just credit to asia miles and make sure you are booked in V class or higher to get 100% asia miles points and marco polo status mileage

definitely try to get marco polo silver sorted as soon as possible so that all your flights count towards 50,000miles to achieve Gold (otherwise you have accrue silver then gold in your first year with 80,000miles).

finally when travelling on CX always check in online as soon as possible at T-48 hours as operational upgrades are assigned on order status then BN number (order you checked in) following the below pecking order:

-MPC Diamond
-MPC Gold
-Oneworld Emerald
-MPC Silver
-Oneworld Sapphire
-MPC Green
-Oneworld Ruby
-Nobodies

My first flight with CX as a OWE I was op-upped by ensuring I had a very low BN number.

Only reason for ex-TPE trips on CX is the super cheap J fares.

Regarding hobo88's question, you need to start your trip from TPE and a stopover in HKG is permitd on the outbound leg only. The best way to book it is to do it on CX's website and do a multileg trip booking.

Is this just anecdotal evidence or is this actually how it works?

I have been Op-up 3 times in the past 3 years from Y to J on CX flights as a Qantas WP. I have only been flying Y on CX about 8 times.

Re: qf vs cx

I've taken to using CX most years to Europe via HKG - it's much superior to Qantas in all respects. I've been able to go Business mostly and am currently a Gold, so there's no problem with lounge access. When I can no longer be one of those, since I really value lounge access I may have to think again, but it might be worth considering Priority Pass.

Generally Accepted on FT CX forum, I have confirmed with other GOs in the real world also who know about the OLCI trick.

Re: qf vs cx

A further rookie question - If I accumulate status credits with the MPC using my CX number, is there any way to merge them with my QFF status credit balance within One World?

Wouldn't it be great if you can but unfortunately the answer is no.
