QF vs CX

Thanks for posting. Even if you have made me hope for an op up when I fly ADL - HKG soon in Y ;)

Looking forward to seeing the new Pier :)

Big fan of CX (via QFF redemptions ;)), agree their hard product is superior, and their onboard service/food offer is the weak link.

Have a heap of CX flights coming up, including our first CX F ... looking forward to scoring that card against QF. CX is already a short odd favourite based on the 6 / 14 seating ratio.

Always found service excellent on CX and food was to my liking.

In regards to alcohol can't pass comment as I am a non drinker

Always find qf redemption flights to North America from Perth

And someone else gets a totally different comparison.

If you're doing my multiple overseas trips each year (especially in Y) you're almost certainly better off flying another airline and crediting to another FFP.
It's not always that simple..

Looking to fly BKK-HKG-TPE in economy with fiancée in September to have some fun in the HKG lounges on a Saturday/Sunday. Why not try to earn some FF points/miles for the trip?

S class is cheap, V class not too bad, M class is more than I'd like to pay but Y class is nearly 6 x the price of S class and 5 times the price of V class.

With Qantas V class and M class earn SCs and 50% miles. Neither of these earns on AAdvantage. I haven't looked at other FF programs but guessing it's similar.

It is never as easy as it first looks.

JohnK - let's be creative.

RJ flies BKK-HKG TuThSaSu with UL on MoThuSa And while the online fares are no spectacular, I would be very surprised if Bangkok TAs did not have some reasonable super discount biz fares. Use some of your QF miles for HKG-TPE in biz (CX says 501 miles?). And with UL you might find the bidding for upgrades (to I class) acceptable even though rumours imply a certain price inflation (still being far under listed biz fares) Alas Y earning classes (for QF) on RJ and UL are (perhaps) even worse than CX.

With the QF status you are in the Cathay First lounges anyway... And you could simply join CX MPC  I would think a status match to Silver would be a given.

Happy wandering

Fred

As you know intra-asia is so darn cheap on LCCs, miles, sales cheap biz class deals it's tricky to exclusively use 1 alliance because of the options.
I'm sure you've thought of this but you could split the tickets into multiple segments to take advantage of CX fanfares ex HKG or the favourable ex TPE deals.

Surprisingly finnair is a good earner of S class fares on CX.
You know I'm always happy to throw around options/share the knowledge if it can help you :)

Even with the refurbished QF A330s?

In my opinion, QF now leapfrogs CX with the new business suites in terms of hard product.

QF food / service I agree with the sentiment here that they win by a country mile regardless of hard product.

Thanks Fred. I have looked at the RJ and UL fares. They are OK but more expensive than CX at this stage.

The whole purpose of the trip is to spend 4-5 hours in HKG airport on Saturday and Sunday for a fun lounge run. Not my idea by the way. ;) TPE was the end result to achieve that goal. I could also a similar thing going to CEB on Saturday morning and returning to HKG airport on Saturday night and then back to BKK on Sunday.

Business class would be too expensive for 2 people. The economy airfares are only 10,250 baht each. Would be nice to earn some AA miles but no deal in S class. The next step up is V class which is 11,350 baht each. Still no AA miles but credit to QFF at 50% mileage and 50 SCs each?

Now the CX search engine is not what I remember. All the connections it offers are very short. Almost impossible to lounge hop in that short amount of time. I have tried using the multi-city tool to get lengthier connections in HKG airport but then it prices in S class which does not earn. I have asked a Bangkok travel agent for a quote which is not usually discounted these days.

If... and it's a big 'if' - you get the new product.

Similarly with A380 flights... you run the risk of either aircraft substitutions at the moment, or drooping beds.

CX offers consistent product without any seat issues. It's a trade-off.

Yes agree but in a relatively short period of time all QF Asian A330 metal will be standardized and therefore superior (in my opinion) to CX's offering which is a big turnaround for QF.

The routes I fly to Asia don't have the A380/747 on them actually as I fly from MEL ;)

Have QF revised their meal service times? Seating aside... is there an advantage to 3 hour meal services on QF compared to 55 mins on CX?

Three hours?! On my recent flights to HKG (Dec/Jan) it was much shorter then that.

Did QF start offering tasting menu in J? :p

A friend recently flew CX, EY and QF, all in J long haul, with each carrier flying out of their home/local ports. His view was that EY blew CX and QF out of the water with a far superior lounge and on-board service; he then said CX was nicer than QF overall. So that his completed his once per year o/s holiday - he is back exploring Australia with his caravan.

My opinion though, CX and QF are pretty comparable overall.

Then you have CX rolling out new biz class from Jan and a350s coming into service with on board internet etc.

I like how we all justify a carrier/route on different factors it shows what we perceive to be important to us individually. Helping carriers understand what drives us individually is a challenge and if hard product is #1 for you it's an easy choice who you fly :)

CX is a consistent product

QF products vary across the fleet

When QF get the service right they are top class, but when they fail they are ordinary

While I agree that airfare pricing exAustralia is not customer friendly - that applies for all airlines and all classes. But I will also maintain that until QF starts to offer PEY/Y+ (or whatever it is called) they will never have a superior offering to CX. Unless they never offer red eye flights Australia <> Asia.

Mileage is varied in proportion to the wandering

That's good news if they have! (That's why i was asking.)

My (very limited) experience with QF business class has been meal service completed somewhere around 2.5-3 hours after take-off (they often don't even start serving the meal until 1+ hours).

With QF F ex HKG the meal service was generally finished with just 6 to 6.5 hours of the flight left.
