Looks good. Not much more than the price of an economy airfare.

Would be great if this deal was on in October.

I take it you have seen the J fares with CX for an extra 1K from a nearby port ;)

Well I would if I am going to HKG/CAN/TPE anytime soon, but at these stage I still have quite a lot of Amex MR points (from the Amex promo) to burn before my better half would let me purchase overseas tickets again. "Tried hard" to burn them in J, but always managed to accumulate enough points in BD to redeem M+C J award, or in SQ program, so not really burn my Amex MR balance too much.

Admittedly I haven't been to TPE so it would be one of the places I wanted to go in the future, I knew CX always have some deals like this exTPE to everywhere else around the world, but just wasn't sure about exCAN.

I took advantage of the cheap QF W class deal in Dec by buying 2 sets of tickets:

  • MEL-HKG-MEL Y
  • HKG-MEL-HKG W
I used the Y ticket to get to HKG in Dec and came back with the W ticket in Jan. I will use the MEL-HKG to go back to HKG in June and return using the remaing Y ticket. For Jan departure.

T class HKG-MEL-HKG puchased Aug 09 flights Oct09/Jun10 at 9117 HKD all up. So current sales prices are about at the same level. But I do need to add the "O class" seats MEL-PER which makes it a bit of a splurge. Does help the mileage balance though. And yes there is no W cabin on the flights HKG-PER-HKG. And while those flights have appealing fares the taxes still make the flights about 6K HKD in Y as red-eyes in both directions.

If you are interested in alternatives the detour to TPE is worthwhile. and if the fare all the way to PER is more than you want to pay - the combination of J return to SIN on CX and then a separate QF ticket SIN-PER-SIN in Y is more financially acceptable.

Happy wandering

Fred
