Hi,

I've been lucky enough to get award flights in J to Europe next May using my AA points. The long haul legs are ADL-DOH, then DOH-FRA, both with Qatar. But first I have a flight from BNE-ADL listed as QF1935 operated by Alliance Airlines. This is all on the one booking.

I have no knowledge about Alliance Airlines so am wondering if anyone can advise on how this works. For example:
At BNE airport do I check in with Qantas or Alliance?
Would I use a check-in for domestic to international transfers? Might I need to collect my checked bag in ADL and re-check in with Qatar? (I have 6 hours in ADL).
I was able to do seat selection with Alliance via the QF app, but there is no information there about my baggage allowance for that leg. It sends me off to the QF website for baggage information but I can't find anything there about code shares with Alliance. Also no mention of Alliance on the list of QF partner airlines.

I can give QF and/or Alliance a call to check all this as well, but any prior intel would be much appreciated to inform said conversations.

Many thanks.

Flight is with Qantas, just on Alliance metal. So everything same as you would normally expect with Qantas. Bag allowance as per Qantas website.

It will be on an E190. We flew this CNS-BNE late last year and perfectly OK in J.

Bag allowance as per Qantas website.
Whilst it probably ends up the same, as it is one ticket and connecting to International, the baggage allowance would technically be as per the Qatar website. Baggage allowance should be 40kg for J, and as it appears you have LTG there may be some additional baggage - but it is very murky. Qatar give their own Gold flyers an extra 20kgs, but refer to the OneWorld policy for OneWorld Sapphire - which gives an extra 15kg but only on top of the Economy allowance - and QR have different Economy allowances ranging from 20kg to 35kg. Assuming that "Classic" is what it is based on, that would leave you with the same 40kg.

As you will check bags in at BNE with QF and they will be checked all the way through, it would be the QF interpretation of the allowance that would matter - so who knows. You can count on 40kg in any case. On the way back, however, QR will be doing the interpreting, so the answer may be different.

You would check in with QF in BNE at the International Connections counter. The baggage should be tagged all the way through, and you won't need to collect it. QF should issue boarding passes for flights all the way to destination. Assuming you have the same in reverse for return, you would check in with Qatar and get barding passes all the way back to BNE. Whilst baggage would be tagged all the way through, and not need to be collected in DOH, it will need to be collected to clear customs in ADL on the way back, then re-deposited with QF for the final leg.

Ahh yes, agree, good summary...... I only travel with cabin baggage, so that is where my head was at (noting the OP was actually talking about checked baggage)...... and that (as far as I am aware) does not work exactly the same as checked baggage, as each airline can restrict what you can carry on.

I've just done a similar trip to Europe and my checked bag came in around the 22-23kg mark, so it looks like I'll be fine. It was only really the Alliance baggage allowance I was unsure about.

Thanks again for all the replies, it seems the trip should be pretty straightforward. Always appreciate the shared knowledge on here :)

Don’t forget that the lounges aren’t airside at ADL so allow yourself a few minutes to get through immigration.

The Oneworld website has a QF International lounge after security, and one called the VA lounge for Qatar passengers before passport control. The QF website refers to a new lounge precinct under construction with limited opening hours.

Both the Virgin and Qantas lounges are after security but before immigration. The Qantas lounge is at the opposite end of the terminal to where you need to be but is only about a 5 minute walk to immigration. Virgin lounge is right at the entry to the escalator that leads to immigration. The Qantas lounge closes at the last Qantas flight which is over an hour before the Qatar flight departs. Virgin lounge stays open for the Qatar flight
