QF11/12 SYD-LAX reducing the A380 to 6 times weekly.

Looking for some insight from the brains trust on here that know far more than me. I am reading this article Qantas A380 to Hong Kong - Airline Hub Buzz Aviation News Australia

As QF is putting the A380 onto SYD-HKG they are reducing QF11/12 to six times weekly on the A380 and replacing with the B787. I'm looking to book F to LAX however want to avoid booking on the day of the week that changes to a B787 as I know the process of getting QF to change the day of my flight to an A380 could be quite challenging.

Expert flyer is still showing the A380 so I am presuming that Qantas hasn't updated their schedule yet. Does anyone have any insight on which day the service is being reduced to a B787?

Just an absolute guess, but given they are about to get another 3 787s delivered, they're probably launching/relaunching a few new routes/frequencies to the US - so capacity to LAX can probably be reduced slightly.

Also AA are back on the route.

It's a bold call to go daily A380 to HKG when it's just reopening. You still need to wear masks and test for covid in both directions. I can't find this report elsewhere, wonder if it's bogus?

As of 10 years ago (source printed 2013 timetable - http://dr.qantas.com.au.edgesuite.net/flightinfo/qf_pdfTimetable.pdf). Yes most was 747, but now it's A380 + 787 (+A330), so ball park similar seat capacity.


LAX-SYD 14 weekly
LAX-MEL 7 weekly
LAX-BNE 6 weekly
DFW-BNE/SYD - 7 weekly
HNL-SYD - 3 weekly

Nil SFO, nil direct JFK, (very limited) seasonal YVR

Now?
QF gave up a LAX-SYD for the AA JV, the rest are the same or have grown. SFO is back, eventually. DFW-MEL added. JFK via AKL launched. YVR (yes, Canada, but I'll include) is year round.

Certainly more competition on the West Coast USA - Australia routes (I'm not that old and I remember when it was just QF & UA!)

Judging from QF fares to the US (and lack of award seats) I don't think they're having trouble filling revenue seats. Their lack of widebodies is well documented on this forum, so let's see what the timetable looks like when they get their A380s back online and the 787s delivered (not to mention the A350s).

The A380 page I'm seeing says "selected flights, peak season only" next to HKG. But the page looks out of date, as it also has DFW as A380.

26 March is the date MEL-HKG goes on sale. Seems odd they are going to add so much capacity to HKG so quickly.

Perhaps that was the earlier plan before the extra 787s were confirmed, now they've got a few extra long haul twins they can split HKG to SYD/MEL

I think the report is completely inaccurate.

EF is showing SYD-HKG and MEL-HKG both being operated by the A330.

QF may well be taking an A380 out of the 11/12 rotation one day a week but there is no way it’s to send an A380 to HKG.
More likely maintenance.

On further investigation, I'm fairly certain that is not a reputable site. It comes across as somebody's "hobby" site - there's not many recent articles, most are 3+ years old.

I'm no longer paying any attention to it.

Trans pacific and Japan pre-covid were the two most profit making international routes.

Even if the article is correct, i still cannot believe there is demand for an A380 to HKG, being prioritized over MEL-LAX or even MEL-SIN

Even CX seems to be barely daily on SYD-HKG, on A350s

But by cancelling the MEL to HGK and routing MEL passengers through Sydney on A380, that does free up 2 x A330's.

Don't disagree with you though, logically seems to make much more sense to keep A380 on those routes. Maybe they are seeing very strong HKG demand after went back on sale?

Pre-pandemic, I think it was often a Tuesday that there was a 747/787 flight SYD-LAX and no A380 flight.

What is the update on delivery of those few remaining 789s? Given the merry go round the 789s are having the last 2 weeks, they could use all 3 at the moment!

Edit: Disregard, I see Joyce indicated all 3 in June in his latest statement. Just in time for the A380s to come back from the dessert and direct flights to NY via AKL to start.... A350s cant come soon enough.

I remember when I bought First tickets for SYD-HKG-SYD in 2018 on the A380 that cost less than Business tickets!!!
