Scientists baffled as man stays in seat for 17 hours on non-stop London-Australia flight

The first direct, non-stop flight from London to Perth launched in March, and with it an endurance test for passengers who must spend 17 hours straight cooped up on a plane. So imagine scientists' surprise, while recently studying their habits, when they encountered a man who did not leave his seat for the entire journey.

I could do it easily but now Im older, Im more aware of DVT. Flying flat/sleeping helps but I can recall a few 12-14hr flights in Y that I didnt get out of my seat.

I don't think it is as strange as they make out. I found it strange that the article pro-ported most people use the bathroom 10+ times a day - seriously, 3-4 times in 24 hour period would seem more likley?

Most adults can easily sleep 8-10 hours without waking up to use the bathroom, so Id think on any long haul where sleep is involved (I unfortunately dont sleep on flights) then a max of 2 trips to the bathroom should be required, unless you have health issues.

I've done SFO/LAX-Syd (14 hours) without using the bathroom, I always go in Qantas Club or terminal before boarding and then again in the terminal upon landing and dont guzzle drinks. On DFW-SYD go once.

Of course I usually book exit row and will get up once or twice to stretch legs/get a snack or something out of the overhead bin, but if I was in the pointy end and able to sleep i can imagione taking only a handfull of steps especially since you can do DVT exercises in your seat.

I use to think this until I did a road trip with my husband who I swore had the bladder of a child in pullups - I was actually suggesting a doctors visit when we got home as I didnt think it was normal for someone to pee that often.

But then one day, while emptying the car, I counted all the water bottles and it was 3 to 5ltrs per day plus a couple of glasses of coke/water during dinner plus a lucazade or gatoraid in our room plus the couple of free Hilton bottles of water.

Whereas when we went to Cambodia, LOTS of fluids and very few bathroom breaks.

I did 6 hours once BOS-LAX without getting up from my seat. No way I could do 17 hours though .

I did QF23 yesterday (9 hrs) and I got up 4 times to empty bladder. And I wasnt drinking booze - just two small cans of coke zero and half a bottle of water. Also had not been out drinking the night before.
Although I am 41 and seem unable to sleep overnight without getting up once...

I guess everyone is different on different days.

One thing I've noticed in flight using smartphone Samsung Health to track steps is that steps are not recorded if walking around the cabin as you're walking too slow to register?

I've several times done west coast USA to TPE without getting up, which is around 13 hours. These flights leave at around midnight and I usually sleep most of the way after being exhausted from a week of work or play in the US.

Not me.... nor any of my close (male) friends.... Age range mid 40's to early 70s.... Where do you get that claim from? If you can sleep like that think yourself lucky. If you only need the bathroom 3-4 times in 24 hours, again, think yourself lucky. (Although 10+ seems unfortunate!)

If you sleep 7-8 hours, and use the bathroom 4 times a day, that means going on average once every 4 hours your awake. If you went 10 times like the article says, that's more than once every two hours, that is insane - one would never make it through a work meeting or movie/play or commute to from/work etc
